Trilogy Supports The Excellence in Mental Health Act
Greetings!
In March, The Excellence in Mental Health Act was introduced in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This is a historic and important measure for Trilogy and all community-based behavioral healthcare organizations. If passed, the Act would mean greater access to mental health services for people living with serious mental illnesses and co-occurring substance use disorders. It would also improve Medicaid reimbursement for behavioral health organizations and establish national standards and oversight for Federally Qualified Community Behavioral Health Centers.
As a member of the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare, we actively support this legislation. Over the coming year, we will be asking you to take action by advocating for this legislation as well. Join us in our support of this historic measure. Together, we can make a difference and ensure better access to health care for all individuals with serious mental illness.

Loyola University Student Event to Benefit Trilogy
We are honored to announce that Loyola University's first annual Mertz til It Hurtz event is happening on Saturday, April 6 and Trilogy has been chosen by student organizers as the not-for-profit recipient of the proceeds!
The Mertz Till It Hurtz Stair-A-Thon 2013
Mertz til It Hurts is an entirely student-organized event where Loyola University students plan to challenge themselves in the name of charity by climbing to the top of Mertz Hall in support of behavioral healthcare. Mertz Hall is Loyola's largest first-year residence hall and, at seventeen floors, it is quite the physical undertaking. Raising awareness about mental illness makes the event not only important to the school, but also to the surrounding community.

The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) recently asked Chicago businesses and organizations to join them in helping to ensure a healthier Chicago by providing healthier vending options in their facilities. The CDPH created the Healthy Vending Challenge to promote wellness throughout the city. Trilogy eagerly signed on. During April, Trilogy will unveil a new set of vending machines that offer our clients and employees affordable healthy snacks and beverages.
According to the City's website, a single 20-ounce soda contains between 15 and 20 teaspoons of sugar. Researchers have found that adults who drink soda daily are 27% more likely to be overweight or obese. They also heighten their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 27%.
People living with severe mental illness are already at an increased risk for obesity-related medical conditions. Many of the medications they take to help manage the symptoms of their mental illness include weight gain as a side effect and this population also tends to lead a more sedentary life. A recent study from John Hopkins shows that through simple nutrition messages, counseling, and regular exercise classes it is possible for those on the path to recovery to make healthy behavioral changes and achieve weight lose.
Healthy vending is the latest in Trilogy's efforts to promote a healthier way of life for our clients and staff. In 2012 we became 100% smoke-free. We offer regular exercise programs for our clients and encourage staff to participate in some of the employee-lead after work exercise groups. These are just some of the ways we are aligning ourselves with the City's Healthy Chicago public health agenda and promoting a healthier way of life for our clients and staff.
