Your busy school week ends on Friday evening, when we welcome Shabbat with warm, glowing candles. This Saturday morning, make your own candle holders with Rebecca and talk about what makes Shabbat so special.

Exploring the High Holy Days Liturgy

Enrich your High Holy Day experience in 5775 by discussing the prayers that are particular to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur - where they come from, what they mean, and why they resonate (if they do). No knowledge of Hebrew is required.
  
Please note that absolutely NO food or drink (other than water) is allowed in the Michael Bernstein Memorial Chapel.

The High Holy Days begin in three weeks, starting with Erev Rosh Hashanah on Wednesday, September 24th.  This year, Congregation Shir Libeynu turns 18. Whether you attend all the High Holy Day services or just one or two, please consider becoming a member in this, our chai year. By becoming a member, you are helping to build our community. Also, as a member, you are eligible for a discount on special holiday tickets for your friends and family. Our membership fees are very reasonable and there are a range of them to suit most economic situations.  
  
The sale of single-service tickets for all the holidays is also now under way.

High Holy Days: The Junior Edition  
  
Rosh Hashanah: Honey & Challah
On Day 1, our youngest congregants will learn about honey, sing with our chazzan, Daniela, and create challah covers. On Day 2, they'll make their own challah! Both days include a visit to the main service to hear the shofar.
  
Yom Kippur Morning: Reading Torah
On Yom Kippur morning, the kids will have a special service of their own. Our president, Jamie Flagal, will read Torah with them.
  
For children ages 3 through 8. In addition to educational programs during morning services, we offer free child care during each service and all day on Yom Kippur.

Educator and board member j wallace will lead a special Yom Kippur program for older kids, aged 9 through 12.
  
Rebecca Sheridan, our educational programmer, will be sending out a schedule with all the details.

Kiddush Helpers for Shabbat Morning Service

We need energetic people to come in a little early to help our board volunteer and our staff person prepare for the kiddush and clean up afterwards.  Help would be required from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. AND 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. 
 
Community service hours available for high school students.

Shir Libeynu People

 

This section provides a chance for our congregants to get to know more about each other. If you are engaged in a project, have an interest, have experienced a life cycle event or know of a congregant who has, please let us know.

 

We request that submissions be in before the THIRD MONDAY of the month. Editorial considerations include -- but are not limited to -- length of items, scheduling of listed events, frequency of submissions, and generality of interest. 

 

 

Ellen Passmore, a long-time Shir Libeynu member, has recently started working at Ve'ahavta, a Jewish humanitarian organization that supports homeless, marginalized and vulnerable adults through a number of programs. Ve'ahavta's work is motivated by principles of Tzedakah and Tikun Olam and focuses on volunteerism, education and advocacy, as well as poverty alleviation through direct service, and through bridging with other communities, e.g. Aboriginal communities. Please see our "Other Items of Interest" section for information on an upcoming course sponsored by Ve'ahavta. Mazel tov to Ellen on her new position.

Ari Shavit is a leading Israeli columnist and writer. With the recent publication of his internationally acclaimed book My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel, he has become one of the most talked about and influential authors of 2014.

 

Merav Michaeli is a new Member of the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) from the Labour Party, where she was voted in 5th on the party list. MK Michaeli plays an active role as Chair of the Caucus for Female Knesset Members, and is a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

 

J.J. Goldberg is the Editor-at-Large of the newspaper The Forward, where he served as editor in chief for seven years (2000-2007). He served as U.S. bureau chief of the Israeli newsmagazine Jerusalem Report, managing editor of The Jewish Week of New York, and as a nationally syndicated columnist.

 Ve'ahvata: Roots of Poverty

 

This six-week course invites those in their 20s/30s to explore issues of poverty in Toronto and their roots in Jewish thinking. Topics include: food justice, labour rights, Aboriginal rights, mental health and housing issues, and homelessness. The aim of the course is to offer an entry-point into seeing social justice as a Jewish issue, and to develop a cohort of young people who are taking action to promote social justice.

A free Shabbat program is offered for children during services. We also offer adult education workshops and programs, the opportunity to participate in our choir and chanting events, as well as holiday celebrations and Oneg Shabbat dinners throughout the year.

 

Shir Libeynu is a liberal, egalitarian congregation, unaffiliated with any particular stream of Judaism. Our participatory services combine tradition and innovation. Shir Libeynu is Hebrew for "song of our hearts," and our services include prayers and music both ancient and modern. Our diverse community is a welcoming one.
