Meet Doran, Shir Libeynu's First (Official) Bar Mitzvah

Doran wearing a tallit that belonged to his grandfather

My name is Doran Hazzan Green and I have been going to the Downtown Jewish Community School since I was nine years old. I have grown alongside the kids, the staff and the school during that time. When I first arrived at the school I expected it to be like any other first day of school. I expected that I wouldn't like it, but the class accepted me in. At the time, I thought learning how to read Hebrew and hearing the stories would never help me but in the end I was very wrong. In retrospect, I only wish I could have gone to Hebrew school earlier. The many subjects I have learned have all tethered together to make one big story that I want to partake in. These stories are retold for the purpose of never losing faith, and to keep the religion going.

My Bar Mitzvah is a combination of both keeping the religion going and keeping people included in the hopefully everlasting story of Judaism. My Bar Mitzvah will welcome me into adulthood with all the responsibilities and pleasures it brings. It is also is a great way of showing my friends and family who are not religious or Jewish that no matter who you are or where you're from you will always be included. A great example is my cousin Sophie who is interested in having a Bat Mitzvah, but she wants to see mine and then decide. I hope that I can show her how much fun it is. Shir Libeynu is an accepting and caring community and I feel honoured to be the first Bar Mitzvah shared with this wonderful congregation.

Congregation Shir Libeynu is delighted to be having its first official bar mitzvah. Our congregation is growing up as well as growing! If your family is considering a bar or bat mitzvah, please read about Shir Libeynu's new bar/bat mitzvah program or write to us for more information.

The congregation holds Shabbat services on the first Saturday morning of each month, followed by a Kiddush. Free childcare is available during the services. We also offer adult education workshops and programs, the possibility to participate in our choir and chanting events, as well as holiday celebrations and Oneg Shabbat dinners throughout the year.

Congregation Shir Libeynu is unaffiliated, liberal, inclusive and egalitarian. Our participatory services combine tradition and innovation. Shir Libeynu is Hebrew for "song of our hearts," and our services include prayers and music both ancient and modern. Our diverse community is a welcoming one.
