Assistant Advisory College Directors Sought

Looking for an opportunity to engage more directly with our medical students? CMSRU is currently seeking four committed faculty members to become Assistant Advisory College Directors.

"This is an excellent opportunity for faculty members who are interested in working with students on a more personal level," says Rachael Berget, Director of Faculty Affairs and Educational Operations at CMSRU. "They will join four very strong Advisory College Directors in making sure our students have the support they need to succeed in medical school."

With a commitment of only about 4 hours per week, the Assistant Advisory College Directors will be responsible for mentoring a group of six students from each class. They will meet regularly to discuss careers, shadowing and research opportunities, and become sources of support for their mentees. They will work closely with the Advisory College Directors: Erin Pukenas, MD, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology (Elizabeth Blackwell College); Lisa Reid, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery (Harvey Cushing College); Antoinette Spevetz, MD, Professor of Medicine (Benjamin Rush College); and Richard Fischer, MD, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology (William Osler College).

CMSRU's Advisory Colleges play an important role in the overall well-being and personal growth of our students. These Colleges, to which students are assigned upon matriculation and remain during all four years, provide general academic advisement, student wellness, stress management, prevention of medical school burnout and student oriented social activities. Students are encouraged to participate in activities within their individual colleges as a means for emotional support and wellness.

If you are interested in applying for one of these four positions, please submit a brief cover letter detailing your interest, skills, and experience, your CV, and a letter of support from your division head or departmental chair. Please send all materials to Rachael Berget at [email protected], by June 14, 2014.

Med Students Flock to CMSRU, Cooper for Summer Research

This summer, 45 of the 64 first year medical students at CMSRU will remain in Camden to work with faculty on a variety of research and scholarly activities. The students, who will work 35 hours per week, are each receiving a stipend for their work.

According Harry Mazurek, PhD, Associate Dean for Research, CMSRU's summer research program provides a great opportunity for both students and faculty. Students can explore areas of interest, develop professional contacts and mentors, and have the opportunity to produce scholarly work. For faculty, it provides an opportunity to engage in teaching and mentoring, and access to eager and willing assistants to help them with their scholarly activities.

"The fact that we found research sites for 45 students this summer is phenomenal," says Dr. Mazurek. "This shows that our clinical and biomedical science faculty are truly committed to our school. These experiences will be invaluable for our students."

Faculty members from nearly every department at CMSRU responded to the request to provide opportunities for students, offering research opportunities in basic science, translational science, and clinical research, as well as scholarly activities in areas such as quality assurance, population health, performance improvement, medical and patient education, disaster planning and hospital finance.

CMSRU Medical Librarians Earn Accolades at National Conference

CMSRU Medical Librarians Susan K. Cavanaugh, MS, MPH, Nancy Calabretta, MS, Med, and Barbara Miller, MS, presented a poster at the Medical Library Association Annual Meeting in Chicago this month. The poster, "The Scholar's Workshop: Information Literacy in the Curriculum," highlighted the librarians role in providing medical students with the tools to develop critical thinking and investigative skills needed for successful careers in contemporary medicine. According to Cavanaugh, the goal was to introduce medical librarians to the Scholar's Workshop concept and to highlight a sample of sessions which focus on the librarian domain of information literacy.

During the event, Cavanaugh was also awarded the Medical Library Association's Ida and George Eliot Prize. This award is presented annually for a work published in the preceding calendar year that has been judged most effective in furthering medical librarianship.
