The Arc Archives

Summer is upon us but we are not slowing down at The Arc!  We are gearing up for the Prom later this month and two exciting fundraisers in August!  Please read about these below and consider how you can support us in our efforts to improve the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families!

We hope to see you this summer!

Please remember that The Arc is NOT an acronym!

PROM 2016!

Once again this year, Pinehurst Parks and Recreation and The Arc are co-sponsoring Prom 2016 -- "Under The Sea."  Find your best dress or suit and get your tickets early for this fun event!

The Prom will be Thursday, June 23, 2016 from 6 til 9pm at The Fair Barn. Ticket price includes dinner, dancing, selfie booth and crowning of King and Queen.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at The Arc offices or at the Village Hall in Pinehurst. No tickets will be sold at the door, so please purchase them by June 21.

READING ROCKS FOR THE AKTION CLUB!
Gracefully Rustic and Laura Thomson

Laura Thomson, owner of Gracefully Rustic in Southern Pines, is generously donating her time and talent to assist the Aktion Club in decorating a rocking chair to be presented for auction to benefit The Moore County Literacy Council.

Chairs will be on display during June and July and will be auctioned off during an event on August 25th. The Aktion Club chose to support the Literacy Council as its annual community service project.

Visit Gracefully Rustic, 223 NE Broad Street, and see the beautiful art that Aktion members and Laura have created!  The Aktion Club is a service leadership program of Kiwanis International for adults with disabilities and is co-sponsored by The Arc of Moore County and the Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills and the Seven Lakes Kiwanis Club.

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT
Emmanuel Episcopal Church

Thanks to the Outreach Committee of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines for choosing to highlight the services that The Arc of Moore County provides to the community during the month of June.

The Arc of Moore County will be collecting supplies for the Book Club that is preparing to work on a scrapbooking project in August.  Book Club members will need supplies to assemble individual books that describe their life story.  For more information or to donate, please contact the office at The Arc, 910-692-8272.

The Arc staff is available to speak to any church or civic group that is interested in our mission.  Please contact Susan Holmes if you know of any groups that are in need of a program speaker.

US KIDS GOLF VOLUNTEERS  NEEDED!
Mark your calendars for August 3-6

Again this summer, The Arc of Moore County will have an opportunity to work with the US Kids Golf Tournament and we need your help with volunteer drivers for Aug. 3-6.

Volunteers will be shuttling young golfers and their families from the Pinehurst Resort to various golf courses, most within a 15-mile radius. Drivers also will be called upon to pick up golfers and return them to the Resort. It is lots of fun to meet interesting young players and their families from all over the world!

Driver shifts will be from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. If you helped us last year we hope you enjoyed it and will be on board with us again this year. If you couldn't help last year, we hope you will give it serious consideration.  Like last year, each volunteer will receive a shirt and a hat plus lunch each day you drive.

Please contact The Arc office if you know the dates you can drive. We need multiple drivers each day, so please pass on this information to anyone you think may be interested. Last year, we drove brand new Honda Pilot SUVs and Odyssey vans! Drivers must be at least 18 and have a valid NC driver's license. Call Wendy at 692-8272 if you can help.

BOOK CLUB NEWS
Summer schedule

Book club members will be busy this summer with a variety of activities ranging from art appreciation, ocean life, and telling one's story through scrapbooking.

On June 6, the group met at Monarch Creative Arts and Community Center where members created their own masterpiece in the style of Claude Monet along with art instructor Terry Hardison.

The community is invited to stop by The Arc office, 673 S. Bennett St., Southern Pines, and see each of the Book Club members' interpretation of a selection from Monet's "Water Lilies" collection. The paintings will be on display throughout the summer!

In July, the study of ocean life will be theme and the club will be instructed by the director of the Dorothy Gilmore Therapeutic Recreation Center in Fayetteville. Each person may also go home with a new adopted friend!

August will provide the opportunity for each member to tell their personal story through the art of scrapbooking.  With instructor Kari Gulovich, the club will learn about a new hobby while reading the book "Scrapbooking For Fun!"

For more information on joining the club, contact The Arc.

ANNOUNCING THE FIRST ANNUAL GOLF MARATHON: FORE FOR FRANK

As many of you know, Frank Smither was a self-advocate that was very involved with The Arc for the 8 years he lived in Moore County. He was also a volunteer in the community for many organizations and was a part-time employee of The Arc of Moore County as well as a member of the First In Families Management Team.  He especially enjoyed all of the social and recreational activities that were offered in the community. Unfortunately, Frank passed away in 2013 and is greatly missed.

His nephew, Scott Holmes, is a PGA professional currently working in South Carolina at Old Tabby Links on Spring Island.  He has volunteered to lead a fundraising effort for The Arc in memory of Frank.  He will attempt to play at least 100 holes of golf in 12 hours!  The money raised through pledges and sponsorships will benefit the social programming for The Arc that Frank enjoyed so much.

The Arc will be partnering with Pinehurst Country Club LLC in the use of course  No. 4 at the resort.

The event will take place on Thursday, August 18 starting at 7:30am and concluding at 7:30pm with a celebration at the course for this great accomplishment!  Friends of The Arc will be asked to volunteer, attend and pledge their support of this event.  Look for links on our website and Facebook page for more information and to pledge online!

Among other special prizes, those who make pledges or donations of at least $100 will be entered into a raffle for two tickets to see golf commentator David Feherty speak on Friday, August 19th!  This has been a past sell-out event to benefit the Linden Lodge Foundation.
KNOW YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE!
Successful Campaign

The Arc has worked diligently in the past several months to help promote the national Arc campaign for informing and educating those with I/DD of their right to vote.  Working in partnership with the Moore County Board of Education, our local chapter has offered materials and information for the general public, and especially adults with disabilities, on the requirements for proper ID when voting, knowing one's polling place and providing the opportunity to complete voter registration forms.

The first event took place on April 30, when The Arc staff and volunteers manned a booth at Springfest in Southern Pines.  We were able to answer voters' questions, look up polling places and distribute registration forms along with giving away patriotic prizes.

The second event was in partnership with St. Joseph of the Pines in Robbins, where the mobile health screening unit was seeing patients on May 19.  The Arc staff was on hand to answer questions and offered materials in Spanish for the highly Hispanic population in that community.

Please make sure you are registered for the November election!

Thank you for your continuing interest and support of The Arc of Moore County. We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events!
On a side note, you may have noticed I've changed my name! I am pleased to announce my recent marriage to Alfred Carter. Have a great summer everyone!

My best,
