We invite you to take a few minutes out of your busy summer to read about all that we have been doing lately at The Arc and to have a preview of things to come later this year!  Please feel free to pass the information along to your friends!

STATE NEWS/ ACTION ALERT!  Final Budget Negotiations

As of this writing, the NC state budget is in Conference Committee to compromise on the two budgets from the Senate and House before presenting to the Governor to sign.  The budget passed by the Senate includes many changes in the state support system which will adversely affect people with I/DD.  The House budget addresses those concerns and includes several items which will improve the lives of those living with I/DD.  Please click on this link to make your voice heard to our lawmakers and to read the letter from State Director John Nash as well as the latest news regarding the budget.

AKTION CLUB SUMMER PICNIC
Planning begins for a fall fundraiser

The Aktion Club of Moore County celebrated the beginning of summer by holding a picnic at the Reservoir Park in Southern Pines on Tuesday, June 24.  There the group enjoyed playing games, feeding the ducks as well as eating hot dogs and other goodies!
The group will meet again in August and will begin planning for a fundraiser in order to be able to give back to the community.
AKTION CLUB MEMBERS COMPETE IN NATIONAL SPECIAL OLYMPICS!

Aktion Clubbers, Roxanne Gordon and Lawrence Shamberger recently returned from the National Special Olympic Games held in New Jersey.  Lawrence received a gold medal in javelin, silver in 400 walk and 5th place in 800 walk, and 7th place in shot put.
Roxanne competed in bowling and received a gold, bronze and 5th place medals.  They met and competed against athletes from many states and collected souvenirs from each state. What an awesome experience for them both! Moore County is especially proud to have these two athletes as members of our Aktion Club!

FIRST IN FAMILIES "FILL THE TRUCK"
School Supplies Needed!

Each year, our First In Families chapter receives requests for assistance from families with children with I/DD for school supplies along with other basic needs.  FIF serves families with limited incomes and the start of a new school year brings about many extra expenses.
This year, FIF will hold a drive to collect school supplies such as bookbags, notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, and any other items, including school uniforms, to be distributed to families that we serve in several counties.  We will be "parking our pick-up" in several locations throughout our service area and asking local community members for help during the first week of August.
We will be collecting these items during the summer, so if you have any to share, please bring them by the office!  Gift cards are welcome!!
More details will be forthcoming regarding the time and location of the pickup!  If you have any questions, please contact Beverly Davis, Chapter Coordinator, at 910- 692-8272 x225.
CHRISTMAS IN JULY?
Not Really...But wouldn't it be great to have some snow right about now?
We are thinking about it as we plan for our Christmas Movie Spectacular for this year coming up in December! Don't miss out on this fun event which we hope to be bigger and better!  The date will be announced in August!

SUCCESSFUL LADIES NIGHT OUT FOR CHARITY!
An Elegant Evening

Over 100 ladies and a few special gentlemen enjoyed great food, drinks and dancing on Friday, May 16 at the Pinehurst Members Club. There were also wonderful donated gifts and services provided for the silent auction.  Almost everyone left with a special gift!  Our "dancing partners" for the evening enjoyed bringing in extra tips, all to benefit The Arc.  To see more pictures, visit our facebook page or website.

BOOK CLUB!
Bringing books to life

Recently, The Arc's Book Club, led by Edna McNeill, read the book Pirates Past Noon, by Osborne.  To make their reading come to life, they were treated to a trip to Myrtle Beach to experience Pirates Voyage, a dinner theater production.  This day long trip included the show and a special meal prepared in Pirate style!
The group will resume in July and be reading the book No Dogs Allowed by Bill Wallace.          .
For more information about the Book Club and how you can help, please contact our office at 910-692-8272.

ARC NATIONAL NEWS
Health Matters- Low Physical Activity Levels for People with Disabilities

Please take a few minutes to read this alarming article posted by The Arc on June 6, 2014 which highlights some disturbing facts with regard to people with disabilities and the amount of physical activity they receive.
The Arc of Moore County recently participated in a national project called HealthMeet where local health providers helped to collect data through health screenings of people living with disabilities in this area.  The results showed that many of the people screened could benefit from an exercise program or access to a workout facility.

As you can see from above, The Arc of Moore County has been quite busy these last few months! We are gearing up for a very busy fall and holiday season so stay tuned for more information to come along!
As always, we thank you all - our membership and friends- for your support for our projects and events which we work hard to present in order to provide services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities!

Sincerely,

Wendy Russell
