Canadian diplomats will be pushing for the adoption of border legislation as the current U.S. Congress convenes for its final few months of business. The embassy in Washington wants U.S. lawmakers to deal with border reforms before a new president and Congress are sworn in next January. At issue are pilot projects announced by President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, where travellers would clear customs in-land in order to lighten traffic at the actual border. Implementing legislation needs to be passed in both countries to begin the experiment, which will seek to replicate for land travel the preclearance system that already exists for travellers to the U.S. in major Canadian airports. Ambassador David MacNaughton said this is the kind of issue with bipartisan support that could get through Congress in the midst of a heated campaign season. But that's only if lawmakers remember it - the issue isn't exactly top of mind in the current U.S. political debate. Read more...

In April 2016, the Chamber of Commerce hosted a Tools, Trends and Strategies roundtable to provide businesses and organizations the opportunity to learn about the services available to small business, as well as to present on Business Diversification and How to Thrive and Survive. What became abundantly clear at that time is that there are a variety of resources for business, but often businesses or individuals looking to start up a business aren't aware of the resources available. Businesses also find it a time consuming process to try to navigate and find what they need or don't even know where to start to find reliable, reputable resources. The Outstanding Operations award is a national honor given to the franchisee who exhibits excellence in store management, functionality, cleanliness and adherence to  Pita Pit's high operational standards. An excerpt from Nicholas Georgopoulos' presentation speech to Denise: "Now how many can say that they have taken these items beyond the Pita Pit expectations? When we send out any manual or task sheets these are based on the minimum execution we expect. They are set to a very high standard but they are the basics." If you walk into Denise's store you will not see the task sheet you will see a binder that staff need to sign off on. You won't find staff asking what to do next or how to handle a situation. They have been trained and empowered to take care of business. You don't just get served a kid's meal with a drink and cookie. You get to see the excitement on a child's face while they wait to pick something out of the treasure chest box. Denise does not settle for the basics, she goes above and beyond and that is why she deserves this award. Congratulations!" Pita Pit Medicine Hat is honoured to receive such an award, and shares it with its awesome Pit Crew.
