The Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that nominations for the 2013 Business Awards are officially open. The Chamber holds the annual awards in support of National Small Business Week, with the very first awards being presented 13 years ago.  The awards were first initiated with two categories, Small Business of the Year and Large Business of the Year, and have evolved over the years to the 15 that will be presented, including the prestigious "Award of Excellence", on October 18, 2013. Each year nominees from the Chamber of Commerce Business Awards have gone on to compete at the provincial level at the Alberta Business Awards of Distinction.  Read More... 

The Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce is pursuing the issue of commercial property tax assessments and has already received several notices from our members about this topic. Property tax increases will affect both those that own commercial buildings, as well as those that rent or lease space.  Those that rent or lease may not be aware of potential tax increases affecting their property, however any tax increases imposes will ultimately be passed down directly through lease obligations or indirectly through future rent increases. A generous donation from Cancarb Limited will help the century-old Monarch Theatre get a new retractable screen this year.  The screen is part of the Friends of the Monarch Society's ongoing effort to revamp the theatre, which will eventually end with a new digital projector and sound system to continue to allow the theatre to show films.
