The Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce is pursuing the issue of commercial property tax assessments and has already received several notices from our members about this topic. Property tax increases will affect both those that own commercial buildings, as well as those that rent or lease space. Those that rent or lease may not be aware of potential tax increases affecting their property, however any tax increases imposes will ultimately be passed down directly through lease obligations or indirectly through future rent increases. Successful local entrepreneur and dedicated community volunteer Rick Porter was named Business Person of the Year on Thursday at MHC's annual Connecting Students to Business Dinner. From April 15-21, 2013, the Economic Development Alliance of Southeast Alberta (EDA) is piloting an eat local week. During the week participating restaurants, retailers and grocers will be offering local food at a discounted price to consumers. A Guide to Local Cuisine will be made available prior to and during the week, releasing the names of the businesses involved, which producer they buy from and their location, as well as the local dish they are serving and the discount offered. Medicine Hat College students will continue to have an opportunity to receive a bachelor of education degree on campus, thanks to another partnership agreement signed with Mount Royal University today. The partnership with MRU replaced the college's current agreement with the University of Alberta, which indicated several months ago that it could not sustain the program. Read More...
