From Our Friends At The
German American School
The 15th Annual Holiday Market:
a German American tradition
by a GSP Alumnus
Every year I look forward to the GSP Holiday Market. This is an event where I enjoy spending time with new and old friends. The Market is set up into a variety of different booths that are unique and intriguing. The booths ranged from German toys, handmade pens, German books, Nutcrackers and a booth of mostly candy, my favorite! The candy booth sells everything from exotic Haribo to advent calendars and even marzipan rolls. I am able to buy lots of marzipan, enough to last me until the next Holiday Market.
One of my favorite parts is all the food; I love getting candy and marzipan as well as eating really good pretzels. There are many different types of food booths for people to try.
Another fun aspect of the Holiday Market is spending time with old and new friends. I love watching the performances of my Alumni friends, younger children in the school, and other German Community members. Last year I was fortunate enough to meet lots of really cool new people. This year I am looking forward to introducing my school friends to all the delicious snacks, intriguing parts of German culture and making great memories!

From Our Friends At
World Forestry Center
"Go Figure!" is now open at the World Forestry Center Discovery Museum and is on view through February 1, 2015. The exhibit introduces early math concepts, such as sorting and measuring, through kid-sized environments inspired by familiar children's books. We're delighted that this exhibit is presented in both English and Spanish!
"Go Figure!" transforms charming children's books into a kid-sized world where children and adults can have fun exploring math with familiar characters such as Arthur, Frog and Toad, and the Three Bears. Each of the five colorful larger-than-life books in the exhibit includes a math-related activity such as measuring, weighing, or sorting, along with labels to guide parents. Featured books are "Arthur's Pet Business," "The Doorbell Rang," "The Quilt," "Frog and Toad Are Friends: A Lost Button," and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears."
We've also incorporated some "tree math" for little ones so they can learn how to measure the circumference and height of a tree using forestry instruments. Comfortable rugs, seating areas, and plenty of books in both Spanish and English complete the experience so visitors can stay a while, relax, and have some fun learning!
