Parish:  The Thought
"The Enemy Within"
The Rev. Bernie Schroeder

In the late 1950's, when America was concerned about our cold war enemies, Russia and China, Robert F. Kennedy wrote a book titled, The Enemy Within. At that time Kennedy was working on Senator McClellan's Racketeering Committee, which was investigating corruption in the labor movement. In the book, Kennedy raised serious issues about how many unions were bought and sold by criminal interests, including the mafia. The Enemy Within became a best-seller.

St. Paul, too, wrote about the enemy within. In his letter to the church in Philippi, the Apostle identified "Enemies of the Cross." While we know Jesus had many enemies - Jewish leaders, Romans (not to mention Satan, himself) - Paul was concerned about Christians who were the enemies of the Cross. He warned the Philippians about people inside the church who were "unworthy disciples," people who went to church but whose lives and practices belied any real belief in the true Christ. Two thousand years later, we still have "enemies of the Cross," those who defile the sacrifice of our Lord while pretending to be followers but who act outside broad definition of Christianity. They are the people who come to church for their own status reasons, ego or ability to serve on a committee which may control the activities of the parish. They are also the televangelists who beg for money on TV to do, yes, some good works, but who also line their pockets and buy huge mansions and private jets. Others use the pulpit to espouse this political view or that.

Beware of enemies of the Cross - the enemy within. They don't openly oppose Jesus like Caiaphas and Pontius Pilate but rather act in a way that demeans the manner and purpose of Christ's sacrifice: To guarantee salvation for all.

Parish Notes
Easter Flowers
The Easter tradition at Saint Patrick's is to use flowers, lilies and greens on the Altars and throughout the Church. The money you offer as a memorial or thank offering goes to this holy worship. The Altar Guild will purchase the necessary flowers and plants to make our church beautiful for the Easter worship services. The Altar Guild has always had your support in carrying out this tradition. If you would like to offer flowers in "Memory of a loved one" or as an "Offering of Thanksgiving", please donate $12 to the Altar Guild. Any questions, contact Ann Nelson, 703-560-2429.
