Last Sunday's Sermon

4 Easter  - May 11, 2014

Text:  John 10:1-10, Psalm 23

-----------------------

Jesus said, "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."

In the Name of God: The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

------------------------

Today we gather to worship, and we will baptize little Margot Miller.

She is the fourth child of the Millers,

and she is the third child in the Miller family that I baptize.

Five or ten years from now,

if she happened to see me,

I don't think she would recognize me.

Yet my signature will be on her baptism certificate!

There is a connection between the baptizing and the baptized.

There is the connection between us, who are baptized Christians.

We all belong to the Good Shepherd.

The Shepherd calls us each by name.

He promises us life.

He promises us abundant life.

We want a good life for little Margot.

We want to teach her the faith that has been passed on to us.

We want to guide her to the LORD,

so that she may grow in trusting Him,

and find joy in Him.

-------------

The early Christians, especially those belonging to the special group of believers

whom scholars call the "Johannine Community,"

held true that Jesus the Christ was present among them

through the Holy Spirit.

Such faith helped them to live on,

although they faced challenges in their life.

So, to the original readers of the gospel of John,

Jesus was their best friend.

He provided for their needs,

and He protected them.

Although they did not see Jesus,

they felt his presence.

---------------------

The church in which I grew up in Vietnam was evangelical.

The emphasis of the church was on inviting people to become believers.

Some of us asked how best to explain Jesus to the Vietnamese?

The missionaries said, "let them read the Gospel of John."

The Gospel of John has a special way to proclaim Jesus' divinity.

But how can one make the connection between Jesus and God?

The missionaries would say, "God works in a mysterious way."

The Holy Spirit works in the heart,

and He can turn an unbeliever into a believer.

This is what the Gospel of John is about.

In this gospel we see the divine name "I AM" used for Jesus' identity:

I AM the shepherd,

I AM the gate,

I AM the light, the truth, the way...

I AM the resurrection.

------------------

Jesus said, "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."

He came, so that we may have life,

and life, in this sense, is not merely about being alive in this world.

It is about the eternal life -- the good life that only God can give.

-------------

What is the eternal life that you and I long for?

Some of us hold that eternal life begins in heaven,

after we finish this earthly journey.

Others would say that eternal life can start right now as we live in this world.

------------------

Jesus said that the kingdom of God is in us.

Life in the world is full of fear and anxiety.

We long for peace and joy,

but the world cannot offer us peace and joy.

----------------------

Trusting God is the hardest thing for us to do.

Oftentimes we realize that God's hand was with us

when we look back at the road we have trod.

Each day when we are behind the wheel in traffic,

traveling from A to B,

we never know what can happen to us.

---------------

We are vulnerable.

---------------

In the baptismal covenant we promise to God /

and to each other /

that we will renounce evil,

and that we will put our trust in Jesus Christ,

and follow Him as our Lord and Savior.

How can we do all that?

How can we do all that without God's grace

and without the support of

the other believers around us?

---------------

Psalm 23 reads,

"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I shall fear no evil;*

for you are with me".

The "valley of the shadow of death" may be understood as "valley of deepest darkness" or "valley of despair."

---------------

There is nothing we can do about our vulnerability,

but we can learn to trust in the Lord.

We gather to worship God,

and to assist each other in learning to trust God.

This is all about the Christian life.

We want to help our children to develop their faith.

They need an anchor when in the darkest moment of their lives they find themselves in the "valley of despair."

------------------

The Book of Act,

in our First Reading for today,

describes the practice of the early Christians:

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship,

to the breaking of bread and the prayers."

-------------------

The abundant life

that Jesus speaks about

is not something that is merely dropped into

the hands of the believer.

------------

We have to work on this so-called "abundant life."

------------

This is why we give worship the priority.

Following the Lord is a learned habit.

As we make the sign of the cross with chrism on the forehead of Margot,

and say that she is sealed by the Holy Spirit,

and that she is marked as Christ's own for ever,

we want to teach her the Christian practice of communal worship --

the gathering of the faithful on Sunday

to pray and break bread together.

------------

Growing up in the church,

she will eventually proclaim,

"The Lord is my shepherd,

I shall not want."

In the Name of God:  the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Đại Ư Kinh Văn Chúa Nhật Tuần Trước

Chúa Nhật thứ tư của Mùa Phục sinh

11 tháng 5, 2014

Kinh Văn:    Giăng 10:1-10, Thi Thiên 23

-------------

Câu nầy là câu then chốt.

May God bless and keep you, and may God grant us peace.
