Easter 3 - Year A - May 4, 2014
Luke 24:13-35
-----------------
"Then they told what had happened on the road,
and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread."
In the Name of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Amen.
------------
There is a prayer in the Prayer Book that reads,
"Lord Jesus, stay with us,
for evening is at hand and the day is past;
be our companion in the way,
kindle our hearts, and awaken hope,
that we may know you
as you are revealed in Scripture
and the breaking of bread."
---------------
The prayer is at the conclusion
of the devotion for the evening.
The Devotion begins with the traditional O Gracious Light,
and part of it reads,
"Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit..."
Coming to the setting of the sun,
we are ready for rest.
A noisy day is past.
The sense of longing often comes after supper time.
People of older times would gather around a lamp or a bon-fire to talk until bed time.
Now many of us choose to watch television.
-------------
A few years ago I had an experience
while at Shrine Mont for the Bishop/Clergy conference.
One evening I stood in the porch of the conference building watching the rain.
There were a lot of people around me,
and there was a lot of talking.
Yet I felt very much alone.
The sadness was hard to describe --
The news about
terrorists, floods, tornadoes;
the many names on our prayer list;
the memories of the past;
and the uncertainty of the future.
In the rain you can't see so much.
There was a road that ran through Shrine Mont.
Both of its directions lead to the dark mountain.
The lyrics of the hymn "Abide With Me"
came haunting as I stood there:
"Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide..."
I then turned around and got inside,
where there was light and more people.
The presence of the people there helped make
me feel better.
Some of them must have had the same feeling that I had.
The proclamation that we shared
satisfied our yearning.
----------------
"Lord Jesus, stay with us,
for evening is at hand and the day is past."
----------------
The two disciples on the way to Emmaus did not recognize the risen Lord when he came near
and walked with them.
They were fearful, angry, discouraged and sad.
They must have felt vulnerable.
Jesus came to walk and talk with them.
They did not know that it was him,
but he knew them well.
Jesus appeared to them as a stranger,
yet his words touched their heart.
They wanted to be with this stranger,
to hear more of what he had to say.
When they got into their home village,
they insisted,
"Stay with us,
because it is almost evening
and the day is now nearly over."
--------------------
How we wish we were in the same situation
with those two disciples.
Jesus came in to stay with them.
At dinner, the stranger surprised them.
He broke the bread,
and he gave the pieces to them.
"Take and eat. This is my Body."
The guest was Jesus, the Giver of the Bread.
Their eyes were opened, and their jaws dropped.
But he vanished from their sight.
----------------
Can such experience happen with us today?
Although don't see Christ he is always near.
He said that if we seek him we will find him.
We cannot do anything about the rain and the darkness,
but as we trust in the risen Lord,
we may become courageous
to face the challenges of the night.
-----------------
In our Prayer Book there is a prayer for the sick before an operation,
and part of it reads,
"Fill his heart with confidence that,
though at times he may be afraid,
he yet may put his trust in you."
----------------
There is nothing we can do about this life
other than offering ourselves to the Lord.
We pray that God open our eyes
that we may see Christ beside us.
We need Christ.
The emptiness of the soul is the hardest to bear.
Our hearts cry for restoration.
In the Book of Revelation,
there is a verse which reads,
"Listen! I am standing at the door,
knocking;
if you hear my voice and open the door,
I will come in to you and eat with you,
and you with me."
Indeed, on the road that we have traveled through,
there have been the times when Christ came along and spoke with us.
We cannot do anything about the rain and the darkness,
but if we trust in the risen Lord,
we may become courageous
to face the challenges of the night.
In the Name of God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
