Last Sunday's Sermon
|
The Second Sunday After The Epiphany, January 19, 2014
Text: John 1:29-42
---------------------------
The Gospel of John depicts Jesus as a mysterious person.
The Gospel writer says that he writes so that
we may believe that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of God,
and that by believing we may have life in His Name.
The writer did not know who we are.
He did not even think that what he wrote would be
read in many languages in the 21st century.
He was writing for the believers
of his particular community of faith
of two thousand years ago,
and he said in Jesus' words,
"Blessed are those who have not seen
and yet have come to believe." (John 20:26b)
--------------
The author of the Gospel of John
remains unidentified to us.
Yet we say John wrote it, anyway --
John the Apostle,
the beloved disciple of Jesus.
He put in writing what was passed on
by word of mouth in his church,
reflecting the hearts and minds of
those who believed
that God did visit humanity in the form of human.
---------------
John and his fellow church members were convinced
that the Word, the Logos, had become flesh.
The Light has shined in darkness,
and darkness could not overcome it.
They had seen it.
They had experienced it.
Jesus was more than just a mysterious person.
Jesus was the Word Incarnated.
He was God.
God has come and stood among humanity.
Those who had seen and recognize Him,
and believed in Him found meaning for their lives,
with joy overwhelming.
----------------
Seeing and believing are among the main things
John wanted to speak about.
Seeing, to John, is not necessarily a sensory perception.
You see with the eye of faith.
John the evangelist had only one thing in his mind:
he wanted people to come to Christ,
and to know Him as the Savior.
Three words stand out in the passage we read this morning:
"Come and see."
----------------
Andrew and his friend
were disciples of John the Baptist.
They were not rich,
but they had jobs as fishermen.
They always had food on their tables.
They were not unemployed.
There were no sign of unhappiness.
Why would they have to look for a hero to follow?
John offers no explanation.
Yet in another place of the gospel,
John puts it in Jesus' words:
"If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink." (John 7:37-38)
----------------
When they met Jesus,
he asked, "What are you looking for?"
This is a soul searching question.
Each life is like an iceberg.
Only a small portion of it is visible.
Most of it is hidden below the surface.
Our pains,
our wounds,
and our thirst do not show,
even to ourselves,
through denial.
------------------
"Teacher, Where do you stay?"
"Come And See"
Seeing and experiencing are the same.
Andrew and his friend stayed with Jesus for two days,
and then three more years,
but after that it took them a life-time to discover Him,
and to know where He stays.
------------
Jesus stays in the deepest place of our hearts,
by His Holy spirit.
There He cries with us
as we reach and touch our hidden wounds
and acknowledge our pains.
Most of us are reluctant to take the journey.
But for those who decide to follow Christ,
the journey into the submerged part of the iceberg is a life-long journey.
At the deepest place in your heart
you meet Christ and come to know Him.
At the deepest place in your heart
you discover what you are yearning for.
That is the place where we see the light of Christ.
That is where you get a glimpse of heaven.
Healing then happens and compassion begins.
And then we may say, "We have found the Messiah."
Come and see. Amen.

Chúa Nhật Thứ Nhì Sau Ngày Hiển Linh
Giăng 1:29-42
--------------
Nó đòi hỏi quyết tâm và can đảm.
