Last Sunday's Sermon

The Second Sunday After Christmas Day,
January 5, 2014

Texts:

John 1:10-18

Ephesians 1:3-14

----------------

Today, we read from the Gospel of John.

There are four gospels in our Bible:

 Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Matthew and Luke begin the gospel of our LORD with the story of his birth:

Jesus was born in Bethlehem,

and there were the angels, the shepherds,

Mary, Joseph, the animals, the stars and the wise men.

--------------------

Yet John introduces Jesus in a different way.

John says that in the beginning,

when creation happened, there was the Word.

The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Word was the Creator, and in him there was life,

which  was the light that shines in darkness.

Sounds like the Book of Genesis, doesn't it?

------------------

Perhaps John did not know the story of the First Noel?

We are not so sure, either, that the writer of the Gospel

was the beloved disciple of Jesus.

Maybe in the first century

not all the Christian communities knew of

the story of Jesus' birth.

Who knows John intentionally disregarded

the story as something inessential,

if he did hear about it.

---------------

Perhaps it was to him the main thing to point out

was that Jesus was so mysterious to describe.

So John borrowed the Greek word "Logos," or "Word"

to speak about Him.

The Word was Christ himself.

This was not merely a spoken or written word.

The Word became flesh?
A baby in the arms of Mary?

Yes.

The Word became a person and lived among humanity.

Eugene Peterson translated John 1:14 as follows:

"The Word was made flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood."

God has become human

to be right next to us,

and to be our friend.

-------------------

God is our Friend.

A friend is a friend,

like someone growing up with you in the same neighborhood, and waking with you to school every morning.

A true friend is one who can share your thoughts and feelings -- no judgment, no criticism, no name calling.

-------------------

The Book of Genesis states that God created the universe using His Word.

Words are powerful.

God's Word created us and can re-create us.

God's Word can restore us to eternal life.

Human's words sometimes can hurt us  --

judgmental, criticizing, name calling, for instance.

But God's Word always speaks of love and peace.

-------------------

In the Second Reading of today, Paul's says that through Jesus Christ

God adopts us as his children,

so that we may have eternal life,

and devote our lives to the praise of his glory.

In the passage, Paul's mentions the idea of "living to the praise of God's glory" three times.

He also says that we believers are marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit.

This notion has been integrated in the liturgy of Holy Baptism.

In baptism, the priest says, "You are sealed by the Holy Spirit, and marked as Christ's own for ever."

The Word has become flesh, to stay beside us,

and to claim us as His own.

No matter who we are,

no matter what we did,

and no matter what happened to us,

we belong to Him.

------------------

The question is whether we know the Word.

This very Word has the power to change us.

The Word can restore us,

rescue us from fear,

calm us when we are anxious,

and give us peace --

yet not without demands!

-------------------

The Word is powerful, indeed.

And so are we.

The Word can do everything, but one,

which is the human will.

He cannot do anything about our choice.

He cannot do anything about our response.

This is why John says,

"He came to what was his own,

and his own people did not accept Him.

But to all who receive Him,

who believe in his Name,

He gave power to become children of God."

----------------

On this very Second Sunday After Christmas we hear the call to accept Him and devote our lives to the praise of His glory.

Amen.

Sự bày tỏ về Thiên Chúa không phải do Do Thái phát hiện, mà do người ngoại bang.

Họ thật là can đảm.

May God bless and keep you, and may God grant us peace.
