 - Costume fittings for the Christmas Pageant will be held this Sunday, December 15th, 9AM ~ 10 AM, and 12 PM ~ 1 PM.
Dress rehearsal will be at 9 AM, Saturday, December 21st. Day of Pageant: December 24th (see below the rehearsal schedule for the day) . To participate, please contact Amelia or Chris Nicholson when you see them at church, or email canicholso@aol.com. Please pick up the flyer, which is in the narthex.
- On Sunday, December 22nd, we will green the church after the 10:30 AM service. Greening the church is one of the very enjoyable times of the year for the St. Pat's family. Please join us. Dress casually, and bring work gloves and cutting tools, if you have them. On that Sunday, we will need volunteers to bring the iron frames for the large wreaths from the storage area downstairs into the sanctuary.

 - Christmas Flowers. Would you like to offer flowers at Christmas? Every year we decorate the sanctuary with poinsettia and greens and stars. If you wish to offer flowers in memory of someone or in thanksgiving for a blessing please make a $12 check payable to St. Patrick's Altar Guild. Please fill out the form, which is included in the Sunday service bulletin, or send and email to stpats3241@gmail.com. You may also call the church at 703-532-5656 to leave a message. Checks should be made payable to Saint Patrick's Altar Guild, earmarked "Christmas Flowers," and mailed to St. Patrick's Church, 3241 Brush Drive, Falls Church, VA 22042. Deadline: Sunday, December 22nd. - The Stewardship Letter and pledge card have been sent to all church members. Please prayerfully consider your giving for next year, and promptly send your pledge cards with pledged amount to the church, or put them in the alms basin on Sunday, so that the Vestry can establish our 2014 budget. Thank you.
- You are invited to teach Sunday School at St. Patrick's!
We need teachers for the upcoming Sundays, Dec 15 and Dec 22, and anytime in January ~ June. We are working on an online sign-up program. For now, please let Lois know if you can serve, especially on the above-mentioned two Sundays. Lois' email address is loiscascella@hotmail.com, and her phone number is 703-587-4527. Please feel free to call her, and she will send you teaching material by email.
 - Blue Christmas Service, Wednesday, December 18th, 7:30 PM. If you or someone you know finds Christmas a difficult time, St. Patrick's invites you to attend this service. It is a time to join together to listen to prayers and scripture that acknowledge God's presence, even in times when we mourn and/or experience struggle.
 - Sign Up Online to help with the Hypothermia Shelter Program. We need volunteers to open the church door on Thursday and Friday evenings on December 19, 20, 28 and 29 for the homeless who will stay overnight in the church. The volunteer should come at 8:00 PM and stay for about 10 minutes following the arrival of the homeless. A sign-up sheet has been posted in the narthex, but you can also click here to sign up online. All you have to do is enter your email address, which will not be shared, and choose the date(s). Please sign up to help. Thank you.
 - On every Sunday we need volunteers to serve for our coffee hour. Please sign up to help! The sign-up sheet is in the kitchen. Everyone is invited to stay after church for a time to visit with our friends and catch up on what has been going on in each others' lives.
 - Westlawn Angels' Tree 2013. - Wish to donate Angel Tree gifts to the needy children of Westlawn Elementary School and do not have time for buying and wrapping? Please call our Winnie Lebo at 703-536-2075. Winnie and a couple of our church people are volunteering to help. If you have taken the angels home, please bring your gifts to church on or before this Sunday, December 15th. This year, Saint Patrick's will give Christmas gifts to fourteen Westlawn families. If you choose to donate cash, please put it in an envelope with Westlawn Angels on the back. Checks can be made out to St. Patrick's Episcopal Church with Westlawn Angels in the memo. Envelopes or checks may be placed in the alms basin, or given to Winnie Lebo. Checks may also be sent to Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church, 3241 Brush Drive, Falls Church, VA 22042. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
- Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve there will be a Christmas Pageant at 6:45 PM, Christmas Prelude Music at 7:15 PM, and Holy Eucharist at 7:30 PM. Please come worship with us, and please invite your family and friends.
Rehearsals and events are scheduled as follows:

5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Children get dressed in the lounge (or chapel or nursery)

 - A memorial service for our Katie Grosse, 103, will be held at Saint Patrick's on Saturday, December 28th, at 11 AM. Your prayers and presence are requested. There will be a reception following the service. Please bring food if you can.
- Due to inclement weather, the Visitation of the Bishop, scheduled for Sunday, December 8th, was canceled. Confirmation and baptism, therefore, have been postponed until we hear from the Diocese.

Kinh Văn: Mát Thêu 3:1-12
Người môn đệ Đức Giêsu sống trong sự trông đợi Chúa trở lại -- một lối sống ngược đời. Thế gian là một cõi tối tăm. Hầu hết những sự lộn xộn trong đời người đều phát xuất từ sự sợ hãi. Sợ hãi nẩy sinh lòng tham muốn; từ đó mới có tranh đấu và chiến tranh, không có niềm vui của Chúa.
Trong Phúc Âm Mathiơ đọc hôm nay, Giăng dùng những chữ rất mạnh bạo đối với những người nghe ông giảng nơi bờ sông Giô-Đanh. Ông gọi những người ở đó là "nòi rắn độc." Chúa đã dùng một người kỳ lạ để cho người ta thấy rõ thực tâm của họ.
Rất nhiều trường hợp trong đời ta làm điều sái và nghĩ rằng nó là nhỏ và vô hại. Ta nghĩ trên đời có rất nhiều người làm như vậy, chắc là Chúa không để ý: một chút gian lận không sao; một chút ích kỷ không sao. Qua Giăng, Chúa đã chạm đến lương tâm con người, nên họ hỏi ông: "Chúng tôi phải làm gì?" Lời Chúa qua Giăng đã làm ánh sáng loé lên; điều ác lộ ra, và người tội lỗi bắt đầu đi tìm sự giải cứu.
Là môn đệ Đức Kitô, chúng ta biết mình hay sợ hãi. Ánh sáng của hình ảnh Thiên Chúa có thể lu mờ trong tâm vì mình sợ hãi. Có hai cái nhìn về muôn sự trên đời. Cái nhìn thứ nhất là thấy sự giới hạn về tài nguyên hay phương tiện -- sợ thiếu. Cái nhìn thứ hai là thấy sự sung mãn và giàu có của Chúa -- mọi người có thể san sẻ cho nhau, phân biệt được cái mình cần và cái mình không cần.
Phần đông nhìn theo cách thứ nhất: sợ không đủ cho mình. Chính vì cái sợ nầy mà người ta tranh giành, cãi cọ, tranh luận mưu hại nhau ngay trong quốc hội. Ít người nhìn thế giới theo cách thứ hai: Chúa đã có ý định cho muôn vật được đầy đủ ngay từ buổi sáng thế. Cái nhìn thứ hai nầy là lối suy nghĩ ngược đời, nhìn thấy sự chan hòa của ân sủng, và sẵn sàng san xẻ.
Chúng ta may mắn được sống trong phần đất dư giả trên quả địa cầu. Xem lại tủ áo quần và tủ lạnh trong nhà thì nhận thấy rõ. Tích trữ nhiều quá hóa ra là một cái bệnh. Đây chỉ là một thí dụ. Sự sợ hãi tiềm ẩn trong nhiều phương diện khác.
Mình đã mất niềm vui của Thiên Chúa mà không biết. Mình đã chạy theo những "niềm vui" của đời, và tưởng đó là niềm vui thật. Càng theo đuổi chúng thì càng trở nên tham lam, bất an, tranh giành, lo lắng. Chúng ta đã chọn lối riêng của mình, không chọn đặt Chúa vào trung tâm của đời mình.
Đoạn kinh-văn hôm nay là tiếng gọi về sự đổi mới. Người theo Chúa phải đổi mới luôn luôn. Họ phải tự chất vấn mỗi ngày để sưả mình. Mình đã không ngay thẳng? Mình đã có lần ỷ mạnh hiếp yếu? Mình đã từng lảng tránh người nghèo khổ?
Ăn năn không phải là hối hận, mà là quẹo chữ U, đổi hướng đi ngược trở lại. Theo Chúa không phải là an tâm khi chết lên thiên đàng. Theo Chúa là một tiến trình sưả chữa, tự kiểm thảo về lời nói và hành động, trong mọi hoàn cảnh. Trong tiến trình ấy, ta luôn ở trong thế bị động, trở nên nhạy cảm về phương diện tâm linh, lựa chọn giữa điều đúng và điều sai, sửa đổi để mỗi ngày trở nên giống như Đức Kitô. Đó chính là chuẩn bị trong sự trông đợi Chúa đến. Sống trong sự chờ Chúa đến là một lối sống ngược đời.
