Last Sunday's Sermon

Proper 18 -- Year C -- September 8, 2013  -- Tinh Huynh+

Text: Luke 14:25-33

--------------------------

As always, September comes bringing us mixed feelings.

Our children have started school.

Some of us have entered the "empty nest" phase of life.

Changes abound.

September is a time to remember.

As September 11 approaches

we are reminded of our vulnerability

and of the sufferings of humanity.

We are following the Christ whom we do not see.

Many of his teachings are not easy to understand.

-------------

In the Gospel of Luke Jesus says:

"Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters,

yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.

Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me

cannot be my disciple...

none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions."

--------------

Hating your loved ones?

Giving up all your possessions?

The word "hate" was used in the original Aramaic language that Jesus spoke.

In some translations, the word "hate" is replaced by alternative words with milder connotations.

Yet the very word "hate" was used.

--------------

When Jesus said about hating the parents, carrying the cross and giving up possessions

he meant putting God and his righteousness above everything else.

Love for family must be "hate" in comparison to the loyalty one is to give to the Lord.

The teaching of Jesus goes along well with the First Commandment:

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,

and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind."

Our first loyalty must be given to the living God.

The follower of Christ must practice denying any person or any thing a space at the center of his or her heart.

----------------

Discipleship is costly.

What would you do if your parent, your best friend or your boss asks you to do something

contradict to your beliefs as a Christian?

Between a job that promises more pay yet in some degrees violates your Christian ethics, and the one paying less yet giving you the peace of mind, which one will you choose?

If you need to speak up in the community about something, knowing that it would be politically unwise to speak, would you speak up or keep quiet?

What about loving the enemies?

-------------------

What can we do with Jesus' teaching?

The lesson comes at the time we remember

the many things that we have experienced in life.

We have seen so many changes that took place.

As we face uncertainty,

we tend to cling to what we can claim as our own.

Alas, nothing lasts for ever.

-----------------

"Only one life, 'twill soon be past,

Only what's done for Christ will last." (C.T. Studd)

When we put Christ at the center of our lives,

we find that all other loyalties and loves are enhanced as well.

Jesus said, "For whoever wants to save his life will lose it,

but whoever loses his life for me will save it."

Đại Ư Kinh Văn Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua

Chúa Nhật, 8 tháng 9, 2013

Kinh Văn:  Luca 14:25-33                             MS Tỉnh+

--------------------------------------

Làm môn đệ Đức Giêsu phải can đảm, và phải quyết chí.

May God bless and keep you, and may God grant us peace.

The Rev. Tinh T. Huynh

Rector of Saint Patrick's Church
