The tornadoes on May 16th and May 20th caused severe damage and loss of life. - Congratulations to Patricia Phan, who graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida with honor, on May 3, 2013. Patricia will be living and working in Cleveland, Ohio. We join the Loc Phan family in thanksgiving for Patricia's talent and success. Below is picture of Patricia and her mother Oanh Kha at her graduation.
 - Our Diem Nguyen graduated from George Mason University on Friday, May 17th, with a B.A in Business Management. Congratulations to Diem and to her parents, Dien Nguyen and Nghia Dao!
- An adult Sunday School class is being held every Sunday, from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM. Our Tom Auld is leading us in the study of the Book of Acts. Please come join us.
- Congratulations to Jackie Thomas on the birth of her son Abdul Karim Conteh, born on May 15, 2013, 8lbs 6 ozs! Jackie is niece of our Milton and Cheryl Thomas.
- Many thanks to Amelia Nicholson and the other St. Pat's volunteers who fed the homeless on Saturday, May 18th! Food was prepared at the kitchen of the church and served at dinner time at Bailey's Crossroads Shelter. Wanted to participate in this ministry, but missed it this time? Come join our volunteers next month, on June 15th. If you wish to donate toward the cost of food, please send a check to Saint Patrick's and earmark it "Food for the Homeless." The Day of Pentecost -- May 19, 2013
Text: Genesis 11:1-9; Acts 2:1-11

Those who learn to speak foreign languages know how challenging it is to achieve certain levels of proficiency. One may need both gift and discipline. Some people suggest that if you are musically inclined you can easily pick up a foreign language, since such learning involves imitation, just like learning to sing or to play an instrument.
 Last Sunday, the Day of Pentecost, we read two passages from the Bible during worship. The first reading was Genesis 11:1-9. It's the story of the building of the Tower of Babel. According to the story, humanity of ancient time spoke the same language. Together, they decided to build a tower that would reach heaven. In the minds of the original readers of the story, the earth was flat, and the sky was like a dome (which was supposed to be solid with openings for rain whenever God lets water to fall through). What was the tower for? Their intention was, perhaps, to have something to speak to their glory. Humanity craved glory and wanted to be like God. They worshiped themselves and the things that they made. They therefore became more and more anxious, angry, hating and greedy. They were blind in their pursuit of power and fame, as they ran away from the reality of their vulnerability and mortality. Perhaps there had been already many towers, but this one was supposed to be the tallest of all. God never lets anyone other than himself claim the glory, and so God made them speak in different tongues, confusing them to the extent that they could no longer communicate with each other. They finally had to give up the project.
The Day of Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. Pentecost is a feast of Judaism, the 50th day following Passover. This was the time when people in Holy Land, Jews as well as non-Jews, gathered in Jerusalem to worship and offer gifts to God. According to the Book of Acts, on the Day of Pentecost (following Jesus' ascension), 120 believers gathered in one place, and  they locked the doors for fear of persecution. All in a sudden they felt strong wind blowing in the room, and then they saw flames that looked like tongues resting on the head of each of them, and they began to speak in different languages. It was the Holy Spirit that enabled them to do so. Immediately they boldly got out of the house and onto the streets. To the surprise of the foreigners in Jerusalem, these simple Jews spoke fluently in their own mother tongues, of the glory of God. Acts 2:1-11 was the second reading for last Sunday.
The contrast found in the two readings is fascinating. On the one hand, the people in Genesis used their gift of universal language for the purpose of seeking glory for themselves -- the consequences of such prideful endeavor were division, confusion and anxiety. On the other hand, the believers in Acts used the given diverse tongues to speak of one thing, the glory of God, and the result was joy and harmony. The former evolves from unity to discord; the latter from fearfulness to oneness. The disciples spoke in different tongues, and yet they were of only one language, which is the language of love in Christ Jesus. Such unique language comes from the Holy Spirit. It speaks to reconciliation between God and humans, and between humans themselves, through the death and resurrection of Jesus.
It is because of this heavenly language that we may have hope and may sing praise to God, no matter how challenging life can be. Nevertheless, this language is not easy to learn. It demands discipline and effort. It is about charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity. To learn to speak it, one must strive to emulate Jesus, with the help of the Holy Spirit. - Tinh+

Ngày Ngu~ Tuần -- 19 tháng 5, 2013 Kinh Văn: Sáng Thế Ký 11:1-9; Công Vụ Các Sứ Đồ 2:1-11 -----------------
Thỉnh thoảng, chắc quý vị đã gặp người Mỹ hay người ngoại quốc nói tiếng Việt? Muốn nói được ngoại ngữ một cách lưu loát thì thứ nhất phải có năng khiếu tự nhiên, và thứ nhì là phải dày công học hỏi. Người ta cho rằng nếu có khiếu âm nhạc thì dễ học ngoại ngữ, vì học ngoại ngữ là bắt chước, giống như học hát hay học đàn.
Đoạn Kinh Thánh thứ nhất cho hôm nay là Sáng Thế Ký 11:1-9. Theo truyện tích nầy, hồi xưa nhân loại chỉ có một thứ tiếng đồng nhất. Người ta nói với nhau là haỹ đồng tâm xây một cái tháp cao đến tận trời. Để làm gì? Để khoe với nhau về công trình của mình, và để cho thấy mình vinh quang đến mức nào - có thể là bằng Trời. Chúa không nhường sự vinh hiển Chúa cho ai hết, và vì vậy Chúa khiến cho tiếng nói của họ lộn xộn, và vì vậy họ không thể nào thực hiện được ý đồ kiêu căng ấy. Con người đã không thờ Chúa, mà thờ chính mình cùng với những công trình kiến tạo của mình. Họ trở nên ganh ghét, thù hận, phân biệt, tranh giành với nhau. Họ trở nên mù quáng về quyền lợi, tiếng tăm, mà không dám nghĩ đến thân phận mỏng manh và cái chết.
Ngày "Ngu~ Tuần" là sinh nhật của Hội Thánh. "Ngu~ Tuần" có nghĩa là 50 ngày sau ngày lễ Vượt Qua của người Do Thái, và đây là dịp người dân xứ thánh ngày xưa tụ tập về Giêrusalem để dâng lễ tạ ơn Chúa. Theo Sách Công Vụ Các Sứ Đồ, sau khi Đức Giêsu thăng thiên, nhằm ngày Ngu~ Tuần 120 tín hữu họp trong một căn phòng lớn, cưả khoá, vì họ sợ bị bắt bớ. Thình lình họ thấy gió thổi ào ào trong phòng, và một hiện tượng lạ là lưả giống hình cái lưỡi đậu trên đầu mỗi người, và họ khởi sự nói các thứ tiếng khác nhau; rồi họ không còn sợ hãi, mở cưả bước ra ngoài, và tiếp tục ngợi khen Chúa bằng những thứ tiếng mà từ thuở sanh ra họ chưa từng học. Khi họ nói thì những người ngoại quốc lắng nghe, và ngạc nhiên khi nhận ra ngôn ngữ của mình do người Do Thái nói một cách suông sẻ, và nghe sứ điệp ngợi khen Chúa. Truyện tích về ngày Ngu~ Tuần là đoạn Kinh Thánh thứ nhì chúng ta đọc hôm nay.
Hai đoạn Kinh Thánh trên có ý ngược với nhau: một mặt, người trong Sáng Thế Ký dùng ngôn ngữ đồng nhất sẵn có để tự hào vinh danh mình -- hậu quả là lộn xộn, bất đồng và bất an. Mặt khác, tín hữu trong Công Vụ Các Sứ Đồ dùng ngôn ngữ lạ Chuá khiến nói được, để vinh danh Thiên Chúa: kết quả là vui mừng hoà hợp do ơn Thánh Thần.
Một bên đi từ đồng nhất tới xung khắc. Bên kia, từ phân hóa sợ hãi đến đồng tâm hiệp một - họ nói nhiêù thứ tiếng, song lại chỉ có một ngôn ngữ duy nhất. Ngôn ngữ duy nhất ấy là Tình Thương trong Đức Giêsu Kitô, đến từ Đức Thánh Linh, tức là Thần Chúa. Đức Giêsu đã đến, đã chết, song lại đắc thắng điều ác và tử thần, khiến cho người ta hòa thuận lại với Thiên Chúa và với nhau.
Chính tiếng nói của Thần Chúa khiến ta hy vọng, hợp với tất cả các môn đệ, các thánh, các người tin kính, cất tiếng ca tụng Chúa cho dù hoàn cảnh sống có khó khăn đến đâu. Tuy nhiên, ngôn ngữ nầy đòi ta phải học và chịu khó. Ngôn ngữ nầy đầy tình thương, vui mừng, bình an, nhẫn nhục, nhân hậu, từ tâm, trung tín, hiền hòa, tiết độ. Muốn nói được thứ tiếng nầy ta phải cố bắt chước Đức Giêsu, với sự giúp đỡ của Thánh Thần.

- Chúa Nhật tuần nầy, ngày 26 tháng 5, sẽ là ngày chót gia đình ông bà Felix Spinelli dự lễ tại nhà thờ. Sau nhiều năm sinh hoạt và đóng góp tại Saint Patrick's, Felix, Maggie, Ruth và Louis sẽ dọn đi tiểu bang Montana vào đầu tháng sáu, để sống gần với Michael hiện đang làm bác sĩ ở đó. Xin quý vị mang thức ăn cho tiệc ipotluck tiễn chân gia đình Spinelli.
- Chúc mừng cô Patricia Phan, họa sĩ, tốt nghiệp Ringling College of Art and Design ở Florida vào ngày 3 tháng 5; và chúc mừng cô Diễm Nguyễn, tốt nghiệp George Mason University hôm thứ sáu tuần qua, ngày17 tháng 5.
- Chúc mừng gia đình Mỹ Linh & Hào Trần về Lễ Báp Tem của cháu Việt Long vào Chúa Nhật Ngu~ Tuần, ngày 19 tháng 5 vừa qua.
- Hội Thánh cám ơn Bà Amelia Nicholson và các quý vị tình nguyện đến nhà thờ làm thức ăn cho người vô gia cư vào ngày thứ bảy vừa qua. Thức ăn đã được mang tới trung tâm giúp người homeless tại Bailey's Crossroads cùng ngày để phân phối. Xin xem hình ở phần Anh Ngữ.
- Xin quý vị ghi vào lịch ngày 1 tháng 6 để tham dự ngày "Spring Festival" tại Saint Patrick's, từ 9 giờ sáng tới 3 giờ chiều.
