- Hypothermia Shelter Nights at St. Patrick's. The Church needs volunteers to open door for the homeless who will come in March 2013 and stay overnight on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the month. We need one person per evening, to come at 7:30 PM and stay until the group arrives, usually around 8:15 PM. Please consider giving your time and participate in this ministry, and to sign up to serve in one or more evenings. You may email Tinh+ (stpats3241@gmail.com) and/or Hao Nguyen (ahnguyen77@gmail.com) and tell us which evening(s) that you plan to come. Please see the calendar on left -- the "Upcoming Events" -- for the dates marked as "Hypothermia." There is also a sign-up sheet in the narthex of the church. For more information, you may also speak with either Felix Spinelli or Elisabeth Nguyen when you see them in church.
- KAIROS Cookie Ministry. Would you like to make cookies for prisoners? Our Nancy Burch has announced the opportunity to reach out in love to the inmates at Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, who will be participating in a KAIROS weekend of Bible study and encountering with Christ. The cookies should be made approximately 2 to 2.5 inches in size -- no raisins or other dried fruit or coconut; no toppings such as sugar, decorations or icing; no candy such as M & Ms; chocolate or butterscotch chips are approved; must be contained in 1-quart freezer ziplock bags (without a tab -- just a ziplock closure) -- twelve cookies per bag. Please indicate the type of cookie on each bag. Nancy Burch will pick up from the Church on Tuesday, April 9th, no later than 1:30 PM. Nancy can be reached at 540-349-3122, and her email address is sheebasmum@aol.com. Please scroll down to the bottom of this newsletter to see further instructions and the suggested recipes. The items will be taken to the Falls Church Community Service, Inc., which runs a food pantry at Knox Presbyterian Church on Arlington Blvd.

- Books for Westlawn Children. Remember to bring the books you want to donate by Sunday, March 3, and our Winnie Lebo will take them over to the school. Please see last week's Epistle for the details of this program. If you have no books to donate, but would like to help out anyway, you can make a monetary donation to St. Patrick's, with "Westlawn books" in the memo line, and Winnie will do the shopping for appropriate books at used book stores. Thank you.
- Food For The Homeless. Please mark on your calendar Saturday, March 16th, the day we make food for the homeless, and please come to join us. Our Elisabeth Nguyen will let us know what time in the morning we will start working. The Vestry held its annual retreat on February 2, at The Falls Church. Kathy Oliver opened the retreat with a report on the Diocesan Council meeting, highlighting the keynote speaker's speech on stewardship and Bishop Johnston's address. The attendees voiced their dreams and visions for St. Patrick's, both now and into the future. Over and over, joy in our diversity was expressed and visions of expanding this diversity were discussed. As one member stated, "We are a congregation of friends" and how can we best add members to this group of friends. Kerry Hual, our Youth Minister, went into some detail on how she would like to see our youth's education develop. Our youth are the seeds of our future and she would like to develop a strong program with many activities and much more visibility and participation for the children. We discussed things we might like to see happen, such as more music, possibly some from our various cultures, use of St. Patrick's land, making St. Patrick's more known in our community. Sincerely, Winnie - An adult Sunday School class is being held every Sunday, from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM. Our Tom Auld is leading us in the study of the Book of Acts. Liturgical Notes
| - About Worship. From the earliest days of the Church, Christians gathered together on the first day of the week to tell the story of Jesus, share a meal, pray and sing. We celebrate the Eucharist every week to continue this tradition. The term "worship" comes from an Old English root "worthship" -- God alone is truly worthy of our ultimate allegiance and devotion. Liturgy and worship are public and communal practices by the whole gathered congregation; they are not performance put on by a few for the entertainment of the many. In worship God nourishes us through Word and Sacrament and strengthens us for service. There is a saying concerning the faithful in worship, which reads, "Before worship speak to God; during worship hear God speak; after worship speak with each other."

Last Sunday's Sermon

First Sunday in Lent -- Year C February 17, 2013
Text: Deuteronomy 26:1-11; Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16; Romans 10:8b-13; Luke 4:1-13 -- Preacher: Tinh Huynh+
------------------------
In the Name of God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
---------
So, you and I are now in Lent.
Lent does not begin today.
Lent began four days ago, on Ash Wednesday, when we received the imposition of ashes,
and were reminded of our mortality,
and heard the call to repentance.
----------
There is no place in the Bible that mentions Lent.
There are Christian churches that do not observe Lent.
I grew up in a Protestant church that did away with many of the Christian traditions,
which it said not found in the Bible,
and therefore
I had not heard of Lent before I became Episcopalian.
These forty days of Lent are week-days.
The Sundays in Lent are not days of fasting.
You may ask: If Jesus and the disciples did not observe Lent,
why do Christians make up one more thing for themselves to do?
-----------
The tradition of Lent started a long time after Jesus,
and a long time after Christianity became popular in Europe.
When the Roman emperor became a Christian,
Christians in Europe were no more persecuted.
Life then became very easy for them.
Someone in the Church felt alarmed, saying:
"Wake up! We are too comfortable!"
That is how Lent came about.
-------------
So,
what are you going to give up?
Perhaps fasting on certain days of the week?
Not even a sip of Diet Coke?
What about giving up coffee during Lent?
-------------
There are also people who decide not to abstain from anything during Lent.
Instead, they choose to do something good
in observing the tradition.
--------------
No matter what you choose to do, or not to do,
the observation of Lent may take you to a place called "the desert,"
which is the empty space of the heart.
It's the place where you find yourself alone.
Oftentimes we try to run away from that empty space.
We've got to be busy.
We must hear something, say something or do something all the time.
Yet fear and anger abound,
below the surface.
--------------
What about the existence of the unseen world?
What do you think about the activities of the beings in such a realm?
Satan?
The Bible says something about it,
but do we really perceive
a devil that exists and constantly speaks?
Have you ever heard and recognize
the voice of darkness speaking to you?
--------------
Jesus was driven by the Holy Spirit into the desert
to experience the emptiness of the soul.
He had already heard the voice saying that he was the beloved of God,
and he embraced the truth.
Yet the desert experience wore him out,
and while there Jesus heard another voice.
That voice enticed Jesus into seeking worldly glory and power, and into setting his foot on the wrong path.
But Jesus knew that the things of this world can never fill the void of the human heart.
Jesus struggled with that voice,
making his arguments based on scriptures.
Jesus discerned the voice of the Spirit from the voice of darkness.
Jesus chose to trust in God alone, and to surrender all to God.
Jesus would rather carry the cross,
for he embraced the hope of resurrection.
----------
How do we follow Jesus?
How do we discern the voice of the Holy Spirit?
---------
The voice of the Spirit always calls us to compassion and forgiveness.
The voice of the Spirit always points out to us where our fears and anger are hiding.
It calls us to boldness in being merciful to those who trespassed against us.
The voice of the Spirit always affirms the hope of resurrection,
not merely the resurrection of the body
but mainly the resurrection of the soul.
The voice of the Spirit calls us to bear the cross.
The voice of the Spirit always proclaims Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God and Savior of the world.
"No one who believes in Him will be put to shame" (from today's Second Reading).
The voice of the Spirit calls us to make the LORD our refuge.
He shall give his angels charge over us,
to keep us in all our ways,
and they shall bear us in their hands.
He is with us in trouble,
and He will rescue us.
In Him alone our wounds are healed.
The voice of the Spirit calls us to trust in God.
In Him alone do we find the true home for our souls.
In Him alone do we find strength to face the challenge of the day.
The collect for today reads,
"Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations;
and,
as you know the weaknesses of each of us,
let each one find you mighty to save;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever." Amen.

Đại Ư Kinh Văn Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua

Chúa Nhật Đầu Tiên của Mùa Thống Hối
17 tháng 2, 2013
Kinh Văn: Đệ Nhị Luật 26:1-11; Thi Thiên 91:1-2, 9-16; Rôma 10:8b-13; Luca 4:1-13 -- MS Huỳnh Trang Tỉnh
_____________
