-  Food For The Homeless.   Saint Patrick's is planning to provide food for the homeless at Bailey's Crossroads Community Shelter on the third Saturday of each month, starting in March, 2013.  Our Liz Nguyen is leading us in this ministry.  Also, during the month of March, Saint Patrick's will participate in the Hypothermia Shelter program of Volunteers of America, providing overnight shelter to a group of homeless women on each weekend.  Please sign-up to help.

St. Patrick's Youth Group will meet  this Sunday, February 3rd, at 4:30pm.  We will be looking at such themes as love, identity, suffering, fear and forgiveness through the Pixar films that we all know and love.  The forum begins each Sunday evening with dinner followed by clips of Pixar films such as UP!, Toy Story and The Incredibles to name a few. The evening will wrap up with a discussion time based on the clips we have viewed that evening. The Youth Forum is open to ages 5th grade and up, and will run 4:30pm - 6:30pm.

 

Epiphany 3 -- Year C - January 27, 2013

      'The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.'

       My discipline within the Christian Church is that I am a member of the Church of England, or more relevant here; the Episcopalian Church of the United States of America, which falls into the umbrella of the worldwide Anglican Communion, and our lectionary or schedule of readings back home in Blighty are the same as they are this side of the Pond.

      There are particularly two readings today one of which on first looking at had a tenuous connection in this period of Epiphany. Luke's Gospel obviously does, because Jesus declares through the readings he is given (in a slightly obtuse way) that he is the man who has received the Holy Spirit.

       This is very much in the ethos of Epiphany because Jesus is revealing that he has the Holy Spirit within him, and therefore tells the people of his ensuing ministry.

        St Pauls first letter to the Corinthians is totally different in its apparent message; that of the body of the Church of Christ and its unity. And it this reading that I wish to concentrate on today, given some of the recent storms within the international Communion of the Anglican Church.

        What is St Paul saying in the reading we have just heard in his first letter to the Corinthians?   He is talking about the body of the Church; that is the body of the Church being the people who are a part of it. The message is one of egalitarianism in that each part of the body, being a complex organism, is interdependent on the successful function of the whole, no matter how insignificant any particular part may seem.

         The body parts metaphor was a commonly used device at the time by people like Pleni and Cicero. Uniquely, Paul used the metaphor of body parts function to dispel ideas of hierarchical importance and special places of honour over other functions that may appear to be less important than others. Even those carrying out what some people may perceive as a hardly noticeable job within the community should not only be recognised for the contribution that they are making, but the personal gifts that they are bringing with their function, which  are no less or more important than anyone else's. Each is crucial to the whole.

         As the pamphleteer and sermoniser of the first Elizabeethan age, John Donne said: 'No man is an island unto himself, but each is a part of the main. If a sod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less.'

Apart from the obvious, what else then has this to do with unity? Well, unity cannot be achieved without mutual respect, understanding and therefore love of other people, even those holding different ideas from our own.       

         Within our Church, we have a great deal of diversity in style and practise of worship, through low church (or chapel as we often call it in England) to joyous evangelical to more solemn or formal Protestantism, to Anglo-Catholicism using a modern liturgy, to an almost theatrical and traditional Anglo-Catholicism that might make St Peter's in Rome look comparatively chapel.

Therefore, it will be difficult for the institution of the Anglican Communion, which includes the Episcopalian Church of America to maintain a cohesive front if we do not feel respect for those who have a different style of churchmanship from our own.

         In the same way, what challenges do we face at a personal level when we talk about unity? Within the family it is fairly obviously feelings of respect, tolerance and understanding through love for members of our family. But wait a moment! Isn't that the same in our social and professional contact with anyone?

        We have all had difficulty in our lives with coming to terms with other peoples, institutions and governments diversity of opinions, actions and attitudes.

Dealing with other individuals can be the one of the most challenging aspects of our lives; after all we are all unique, complicated and different beings.

        It can become even more complicated when we realise that two people who have an identical experience will see and interpret it in different ways. For example; a family have a dog and a cat as pets. The dog thinks, these people feed me, give me a home and make sure that I am in good health; that means they must be gods. On the other hand, the cat thinks, these people feed me, give me a home and make sure I am in good health; that means I must be a god.

         Unity with others is brought about by a wholeness within ourselves, and within the Church by invocation of the Holy Spirit. This can be done by regular reading of the scriptures slowly and in a thoughtful way; known as lectio divina, (divine reading) by prayer and asking questions in a submissive way without the interference of personal opinion  or ego, in other words obedience to the divine inspiration and Word. Acceptance and obedience to our faith is a good start.

          There are one or two issues that are being debated at General Synod in London at the moment the likely outcomes with which I do not agree, but if those outcomes are cleared then I shall have to live by them when they happen. I am not going to break away from my church because of that. But I can assure you that the decisions will be seen as divisive by many. I shall remain obedient to my church.

          Our concern should be just that: concern for people and our environment and for our church. I feel that if we use our talents however humble or high profile not just for our own benefit as St Paul was telling the Corinthians a natural egalitarianism will take place as will a firmer unity in the community which each of us serve.

Chúa Nhật Thứ Ba Sau Ngày Hiển Linh, 27 tháng 1, 2013 -

Mùa Hiển Linh là lúc chúng ta nghe sứ điệp về sự hiện đến của Chúa: nếu Chúa không tự bày tỏ thì loài người không có cách chi biết Ngài. Nếu không biết Chúa hiện diện thì chúng ta không có hy vọng và không có thể thấy ánh sáng. Sự Sáng đã đến trong thế gian, để hễ ai nhận Ngài thì Ngài ban cho sức sống để trở nên con cái Đức Chúa Trời. "Sức sống" (power) ấy là Thánh Linh của Đức Chúa Trời.

            Đức Thánh Linh khiến người ta từ tăm tối trở nên tươi sáng, từ ngăn cách đối với Thiên Chúa đến tư cách làm con của Ngài, từ vô vọng đến hy vọng.

            Đoạn Kinh Thánh thứ nhất, trong sách Nê Hê Mi nói lên sự hiện diện của Thần của Chúa. Sự hiện diện ấy biến than khóc thành vui mừng. Trong truyện tích, dân Do Thái mới được vua Babylon cho phép hồi hương sau thời gian tù đày biệt xứ. Họ trở về Giêrusalem chứng kiến cảnh hoang tàn, và đây là lần đầu tiên họ được nghe đọc Luật Pháp Môi Se, tức là Lời Chúa. Các người lãnh đạo vừa đọc vừa giải thích luật cho họ hiểu; và tất cả òa lên khóc. Cảnh cu~ không còn. Sự thay đổi nào cu~ng gây xúc động, dù là thay đổi cho sự việc nên tốt hơn.       

            Trong trường hợp của truyện Nê Hê Mi, sự có mặt của Thánh Thần Chúa khiến sự xúc động nói trên có một ý nghĩa đặc biệt: khi nghe và hiểu lời Chúa thì người ta thấm thía về mối liên hệ của mình với Đấng Thánh, vì họ bị cáo trách về sự lơ là đối với Ngài. Bản chất con người là như chiên đi lạc, và vì đi lạc nên không thấy được sự ngọt ngào của Chúa, và vì vậy mà họ đã trải qua một thời gian xao lãng khá dài. Nay nghe Lời Chúa, họ thấy mình thiếu thốn quá nhiều: mình có Cha giàu có vô cùng, mà mình thì bầm dập lao khổ. Ở đây không phải tự họ nhận ra điều ấy, mà chính Thánh Thần cho họ thấy sự thiếu thốn của mình.

            Nê Hê Mi nói: hôm nay là ngày thánh của Chúa. Vì vậy, hãy thôi khóc than, mà phải hoan hỉ trên cuộc hành trình của mình, vui hưởng điều Chúa ban và đừng quên dành phần ăn cho những người không có chi ăn. Chúa là sức mạnh của anh chị em.

            Trong Phúc Âm Lu Ca, Đức Giêsu khởi đầu chức vụ và Ngài được đầy dẫy Thần cuả Chúa. Ngài đọc cho những người tụ họp hôm ấy đoạn Kinh Văn trong sách Êsai: "Thần Chúa ngự trên ta, vì Ngài đã xức dầu cho Ta để mang tin mừng cho kẻ nghèo, giải phóng kẻ bị cầm tù và mở mắt cho người đui, để kẻ bị ức hiếp được tự do, và công bố năm hoan hỉ của Chúa." Cả hội đường Do Thái chăm chú nhìn Giêsu. Ngài nói thêm: "Hôm nay đã ứng nghiệm lời Kinh Thánh các người từng nghe bao thế kỷ."

            Sự Sáng đã đến trong thế gian. Thần Linh Chúa đã có mặt. Chúng ta phải làm gì? Chúng ta phải sống xứng hợp điều mình công bố, noi gương Đức Giêsu và vững lòng tin cậy.   Chúng ta không còn than thân trách phận, nhưng chúng ta đứng lên lau sạch nước mắt, tạ ơn Chúa về cuộc đời mình, và tiếp tục cuộc hành trình, và không quên "dành phần ăn cho kẻ không có chi ăn." Đó chính là công bố Tin Mừng của Chúa. Những điều chúng ta đang thực hiện tại Hội Thánh: quyên góp cho nạn nhân thiên tai, làm thức ăn cho người homeless, chương trình trú lạnh mùa đông, vv. là những chuyện cụ thể người tín hữu làm với đức tin của mình, và chính những điều ấy nói lên niềm tin của mình.  Đó là sứ điệp của Hiển Linh.

 

- Xin quý anh chị em cầu nguyện cho Bà Tammy Văn Phụng, tức ca sĩ "Châu Hà," hôm nay vào bệnh viện Fairfax mổ xương sống.

- Làm thức ăn cho người homeless. Nhà Thờ chúng ta sẽ bắt đầu làm thức ăn cho người homeless vào ngày thứ bảy thứ ba của mỗi tháng, bắt đầu từ tháng 3, 2013, do cô Elisabeth Nguyễn tổ chức. Trong tháng 3, chúng ta cu~ng sẽ cộng tác với Volunteers of America cho người homeless trú lạnh qua đêm trong nhà thờ vào các ngày thứ sáu, thứ bảy và Chúa Nhật, tổng cộng mười lăm đêm.   Nhà thờ cần quý vị tham gia bằng cách có mặt vào khoảng 7 PM ~ 8 PM để mở cửa cho họ vào.  Xin ghi danh.  Năm ngoái và năm 2011, mỗi đêm có khoảng 15 phụ nữ đến ngủ tại Saint Patrick's. Họ có sleeping bags và có người của tổ chức Volunteers of America trông coi, rất có trật tự. Mỗi sáng họ thức sớm và đi khỏi; tất cả mọi thứ trong nhà thờ được trả về chỗ cu~ và dọn dẹp sạch sẽ chu đáo.   Đây là năm thứ ba nhà thờ chúng ta tham dự công tác thiện nguyện nầy.

 

- Hội Thánh cần quý vị tình nguyện giúp coffee hour sau lễ. Tờ ghi danh có trong bếp. Xin quý vị ghi danh giúp cho Hội Thánh. Xin cám ơn quý vị.

 

- Lớp Trường Chúa Nhật cho người lớn đã bắt đầu với Sách Công Vụ Các Sứ Đồ, do ông Tom Auld hướng dẫn. Kính mời tất cả quý vị tham dự. Lớp học bắt đầu lúc 9 giờ 30 mỗi sáng Chúa Nhật.

 

-    Altar Guild sẽ họp vào ngày Chúa Nhật, 3 tháng 2, lúc 12 giờ trưa.  Chương trình họp sẽ gồm phần bàn luận về phfn công và giờ phục vụ trong tuần.   Altar Guild cần thêm người phục vụ. Xin cho bà Lois Cascella biết nếu quý vị có thể phục vụ Hội Thánh trong mục vụ nầy.
