Last Sunday's Sermon
|
1 Epiphany -- year C - January 13, 2012
Text: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 -- Tinh Huynh+
-------------------------- And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved, with you I am well pleased."
In the Name of God: The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
-------------------------
Why did Jesus the Son of God get baptized? Did Jesus need John's baptism, a baptism of repentance? Nobody knows.
As Jesus prayed, the heaven was opened.
The Holy Spirit came upon Him.
And then came the voice from heaven calling Him the Beloved, with whom God is well pleased. ------------------------
All Christians make their vows at baptism.
They renounce Satan and evil.
They promise to follow Jesus, seeking and serving Christ in all person,
and loving the neighbor.//
They promise to strive for justice and peace among all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being.
-------------------------
I came from a culture where the powerful never acknowledge their faults if they do wrong to the powerless.
Most parents in such culture do not apologize to their kids for the wrong they did to them.
Many Vietnamese men were beaten up by a parent or an older sibling when they were growing up.
Corporal punishment is still common in many of today's societies.
The very last promise made at baptism is significant.
Respecting the dignity of every person means seeing the image of God in every human being.
--------------------
Very so often we see we are different.
Yes. Our skin colors are different.
Our foods are different.
Our languages are different.
And we can be very much mindful about our differences.
Yet we all are the same.
---------------
When all the people had been baptized in the Jordan,
Jesus stepped into the water.
He was waiting in the line, just as anyone else.
Jesus did not need to be baptized,
He had no sin to repent of,
but he got baptized anyhow.
Jesus did not need to go to the cross,
but he did go to the cross.
The Son of God emptied himself of power to become powerless.
He became a human being, and dwelled among us. Jesus identified himself with us.
He wanted to say, "I am the same with you all."
This is Epiphany.
God has revealed Himself in a very special way.
His glory has been revealed to the whole world.
God has come to dwell among humanity.
God's presence was so overwhelming at Jesus' baptism.
The Holy Spirit manifested itself, coming down from heaven
in the form of a dove.
Jesus is certainly a special person,
a mysterious person.
He was supposed to be different.
Yes. He is unique.
There is no human being who is like Him.
Yet he appeared at the river Jordan,
and he stood among the people,
and he saw himself the same with everyone else,
and they did him likewise.
Yet most intriguing was the voice from heaven:
"You are my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."
----------------------
Some of us are fortunate, growing up with parents who expressed love and approval in words and action, saying,
"I love you.
I am very pleased with you.
You are fine."
Yet most of us grew up longing for acceptance and approval.
Some of us have problem with self-rejection,
constantly struggle with self-doubt and fear.
--------------
We are so very much concerned about what the world thinks of us.
What others think about us is not necessarily what God thinks about us.
Oftentimes we create for ourselves a veneer of self-esteem.
We strive for popularity, success and wealth.
We are very much concerned about how we look.
Instead of embracing the truth that God is delighted in us,
we may say to ourselves, "If the world loves me, then I will love me,
and will be delighted in myself."
We have already had a home, the Father's home, and yet we constantly look for home in the wrong places.
What we see about ourselves is not necessarily what God sees.
The voice that Jesus heard at his baptism is exactly what we need to hear.
That voice is also for us.
That voice is calling us today, saying,
"You are my beloved child; with you I am well pleased."
--------------
Do we really want to hear that voice,
which tells us that we are worthy?
-------------
Living the life of the beloved is a daily practice,
imitating Jesus in words, thoughts and action.
---------------
We are called to put into practice your baptismal covenant.
Be more keenly aware of the image of God in other people.
Recognize the blessing of sameness.
All humans are the same.
Jesus followed the voice he heard,
He embraced the truth that God was delighted in him.
For us, the practice of living the life of the beloved is not easy.
We have to keep reminding ourselves that God is also delighted in us.
--------------
May we, who are baptized into Jesus' Name,
keep the covenant that we have made,
and boldly confess him and Lord and Savior. Amen.

Đại Ư Kinh Văn Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua
|
