Principal's Weekly Update
May 31, 2015

Dear Knights,

Foothill Students have been very busy lately accomplishing amazing things!  The  end of the year is always a great time to celebrate our students achievements, but this year, it seems like there are a lot of them.

Last Weekend - UCI Energy Invitational

Foothill Engineering places 1st and 2nd at the UCI Energy Invitational

The Foothill Engineering team took first and second place and won the overall champion award at the UCI Energy Invitational on Sunday, May 24th.

Under the leadership of FEAT Academy Director Jeff Farr, Foothill entered two cars into the competition. Car 88 and Car 21 placed first and second in the Standard division, respectively. Car 88 was co-driven by Sean O'Bannon and Jake Paulson with a team of Gavin Greek, Zachary Cushing-Murray, Yan Reyes, and Bao Mai. Car 21 was driven by Karla Hernandez with Mark Amezcua, Franco Vigil, and Brian Rivera as team members. Car 21 is brand new, while Car 88 is in its third racing season and has won three races. Both cars were built from scratch by engineering students and are all electric.

The competition challenged engineering teams to drive as many laps as possible with $1 of energy in one hour. Aside from placing first and second, Foothill's teams were declared the overall champions for best optimizing their energy usage in the time provided.

This is the fourth year Foothill Engineering has entered the UCI Invitational and the third year that Foothill Engineering has placed first in the Standard division. 16 high school teams and four college teams were entered in the competition, with the UCI team placing third after Foothill.

Tuesday Evening - Awards of Excellence

Foothill High School recognized almost 500 students in the annual Awards of Excellence ceremony.  Students were honored for great grades and exceptional work in their departments and classes.  It was really a tremendous ceremony and I would like to thank Mrs. Schmid and Mrs. Dabrow for all of their hard work putting it together.  As volunteers, they went above and beyond to make the evening memorable for all of the students and parents that attended.  And as always, I would like to thank Mrs. McGinis who coordinated all of the awards with the teachers and department chairs and worked tirelessly to clean up all of the loose ends.

Wednesday - Senior Information

On Wednesday, Mr. McKinley and Dr. Nye spoke to all of the senior students about what to expect in these last two weeks of school.  Please see the Senior Activities website and Haiku page for specifics over the next two weeks.

Thursday Evening - Basketball & AVID

On Thursday evening, the 3rd annual staff vs. students basketball game was held.  As a fundraiser to help support the needy students fund, the basketball game was a great event.  The staff eventually won the game, but we needed the help of NBA and Stanford superstar Josh Childress!  It was definitely a memorable evening for all.

AVID

Also on Thursday night, TUSD honored our AVID Seniors from FHS, BHS, and THS. The ceremony recognized seniors that successfully completed 3 or more years in the program. Some of our exceptional students were honored with scholarship money for college.

This year AVID students will be recognized at Foothill's graduation with the stoles they received last night.

Congratulations on this outstanding accomplishment!

And thanks to Ms. Dang and Ms. Subherwal for keeping AVID alive.  AVID is an integral program at Foothill for those students that are willing to commit to a rigorous college prep program.

Saturday Night - ATA Play

Last night, I was able to go see Puzzle Pieces, the advanced theater arts play.  Our students did an amazing job with acting, set design, costume design and sound/lighting.  In Mrs. Manasas's first year, she did a tremendous job of pulling together a group of students to create a wonderful show.  I was very proud of the all of the students in ATA.  They really worked well together, as a team, to overcome a lot of challenges and barriers to produce a tremendous show.  Congratulations to all!

Upcoming Events...

Chili Cookoff

The FHS Instrumental Music Program has been chosen as a recipient of the Tustin Chili Cook Off Grant.  Our music programs will receive a share of the proceeds from next weekend's event.  The Chili Cook off takes place June 7 in Old Towne Tustin from 11am-5:30pm.  Come out and enjoy some fun while supporting the music programs at FHS!

Marijuana Workshop

The Orange County Sheriff's Department is hosting a Marijuana Summit at the Orange County Rescue Mission on June 4 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM.  This is an excellent opportunity to hear about the new trends, risks and facts about marijuana and its impact on our students.  Please see the attached flier for more information.

Thanks for reading and your support of Foothill students!
