Principal's Weekly Update
September 19, 2014

Dear Knights

I am excited to announce the launch of a brand new website for our counseling department.  The Foothill EdFund directed funds towards a college and career consultant, as well as a website designer, to make College and Career information readily available to all students.  Please go to  http://foothillhscounseling.org and check out the resources available to our students.  It is essential that our students use Naviance.  Naviance is a tremendous program with many resources that will make our students college admission process far easier.  Many of the links on the FHS Counseling site refers students and parents to Naviance.  If you haven't already logged into Naviance, please make sure you do soon.  Please don't spend your hard earned money on a private college counselor until you see what Naviance has to offer.

Back to School Night

Back to School Night will be held next Tuesday, September 23 at 7:00PM and will last until about 9:00.  The zero period class session will begin promptly at 7:00PM and the first period class session will start at 7:15PM.  Parents should report directly to those classrooms, as there will not be a general session in the gym this year.  Please click here for our hand out that will help guide you through the night.  Have your student fill in their teachers and room numbers.  You can also get this information off of Aeries Parent Portal.  Please make sure that you arrive early, as parking will be limited.  We hope to see you Tuesday night!

Barnes & Noble is bringing the books to you!

New this year... for your convenience Barnes & Noble will be selling the required English reading books at Back to School night on September 23rd.  You no longer have to run around town to get your child a copy of the books.  We will concurrently have the Bookfair at B&N at the Marketplace, so if you are shopping there for any reason in September simply mention Foothill at checkout to benefit the FHS library.  In no way is this a required purchase for Foothill High School classes.  Required books are always provided for all students.

PSAT/ReadiStep

This year, Tustin Unified School District has secured state funding for freshman, sophomore and junior students to take college readiness exams.  On October 15, all Freshmen will take the ReadiStep, which is a curriculum appropriate version of the SAT for ninth graders, and Sophomores and Juniors will take the PSAT.  Seniors will have workshops with their counselors and a mini-munch to follow.  All students will take these tests free of charge.

Old Foothill Road Drop Off

As some of you may have noticed, the county has been doing construction work on the curbs on Old Foothill Road behind the Foothill campus.  In the morning, with the sun coming up, it is very hard to see pedestrians, bicyclists and other motorists.  We have asked the Orange County Sherriff's Department and the CHP to increase their presence in the area in the morning to help direct traffic.  Additionally, Foothill staff is on site attempting to increase the safety measures.  The legal parking areas have changed and the some curbs have been painted red to eliminate parking and stopping.  We will work with the county to improve the traffic flow, but we need to let the project be completed first.  If at all possible, please avoid this area in the mornings.

Heat Guidelines

We made it through one of the worst heat waves in recent history.  In the event that the heat and humidity return, I have attached the guidelines here that Foothill and TUSD are using for student activities during hot days.

Have a great weekend,

Nick Stephany, Ed.D.
