Principal's Message - Dr. Nick Stephany

I am proud to announce that George Waibel, Foothill's Instrumental Music Teacher, has been named the Foothill High School 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year. George has single handedly built the Foothill Instrumental Music Program over the last 42 years. He is the most senior teacher in the district and he is planning on retiring at the end of this school year. George is an incredible asset to our students and one of the very best educators I have ever met. Congratulations to George on his selection as Foothill's Teacher of the Year and for an amazing career. George has made a true difference in the lives of tens of thousands of people.

We will administer the California High School Exit Exam on March 18 and 19. All sophomore students will take the English part of the test on Tuesday, March 18 and the math portion on Wednesday, March 19. Freshman, Junior and Senior students will have a modified schedule on those days. The modified schedule will be posted on our website and more details will be communicated soon.

PTO Presidents' Message: Christine Goldhammer and Kerry Racanelli

In keeping with our three-fold mission to provide Information, Support, and Recognition/Appreciation, the PTO is supporting a number of school events this month. We are providing chaperones for the Sadie Hawkins dance on March 15 and coordinating volunteers for the Blood Drive on March 20. If you can volunteer for either one, please contact us at foothillpto@ymail.com. We are also busy planning the spring Honor Roll Social which will take place on April 9, the Order of the Knights event which will take place on April 22,and the Academic Awards of Excellence which will be held at Calvary Church on May 27. In addition, PTO has expanded its involvement with Health and Wellness Week March 10-14. This is the same week as Sadie's Spirit week and we've collaborated with ASB to plan fun and healthy activities.

This month's PTO meeting is March 12 at 10:30am in the upstairs conference room of the science building. The meeting, and the Principal's Roundtable that follow, are a great way to hear about what is going on at the school. Don't be shy - please join us if you can!

Finally, we really encourage you to attend the Foothill Ed Fund's    "A Classic Knight" Dinner and Auction on Saturday, March 8, at the Astor Classic Automotive Museum in Anaheim.Fundraising is not a major part of the PTO's mission at Foothill. Foothill relies on the Ed Fund to raise vital funds to purchase classroom items and pay for activities that are requested by the teachers and administration to benefit ALL students. Please support our school by attending the auction. Only a few tickets are still available so reserve your spot today at www.supportfhs.com (see more information about the Auction in the Ed Fund article below). It promises to be a fun evening!

We hope that the information we provide through this newsletter is proving helpful - please send us suggestions for other items you would like us to include.

Foothill's Teacher of the Year is...

Then. . .

Congratulations to Foothill's 2014 Teacher of the Year, George Waibel! Throughout his 42 year career, all at Foothill High, Mr. Waibel is said to have taught just about everything under the sun. His current classes include Band, Film Analysis, Guitar, Jazz Ensemble and Orchestra. He has also taught English and History and has served as ASB Director and Teacher's Union representative. Mr. Waibel has been a father figure to many students and his teaching philosophy, "Education, Performance, Fun" has influenced the success of literally thousands of young people.

Mr. Waibel is an avid car enthusiast and enjoys riding his Mustang and

1986 Kawasaki Vulcom 1500 on weekends.  He also loves the Angels

. . . and Now

and especially enjoys spending time with his grandchildren and  family.

Coincidentally, his son, David Waibel, teaches World History and Online Geography and serves as ASB director at Foothill. Perhaps FHS can look forward to another 40 years of the Waibel teaching tradition?

Please consider supporting Mr. Waibel at the 20th Annual Teacher of the Year Dinner on Friday, May 9. This evening, sponsored by the Tustin Public Schools Foundation, is a wonderful celebration of our district's 28 outstanding teachers   and a chance for each school to show its school spirit and support of its selected Teacher of the Year. Let's make sure Mr. Waibel has a LOUD cheering section! If you are not able to attend, please consider sponsoring a teacher or placing a tribute ad in the evening's program. Online tickets are $55 and tribute ads are $25.

 2014-15 Course Registration Process

From March 10 to 14, students will each meet with their counselors to register for next year's classes. At this time, students must bring their signed course request forms and review their course selections with their counselors.  Each student will spend approximately five minutes with his or her counselor.  Parents are encouraged to review their child's transcript, status sheet and course selection sheet prior to registration.

It is important to remember that course requests can be changed and modified until the end of the school year.

Get Ready to Rock - Battle of the Bands Auditions Set for Wednesday, April 30

PTO Logo Idea

Foothill is so fortunate to have a supportive community of volunteers who donate thousands of hours to make our PTO student, staff and parent programs possible. Although we can't thank everyone by name (literally hundreds), we would like to send our heartfelt appreciation and special "kudos" to:

Lise Flannery and Zeenat Gala for organizing the Mock SAT/ACT to help prepare our students for these important exams (and raise some funds for the PTO too).41 students took the exam which raised $745 for the PTO. A special thanks to Christine Goth and Connie Guevara for making copies, proctoring and helping with set up on test day!

Pattie Figueroa and her team of volunteers including Jeanne Arehart, Lynn Bradley, Zeenat Gala, Kristie Holt, Leanne Martin, Marianne Olsen, Jennifer Schmid and Christy Taylor for facilitating the Vision & Hearing screening and moving all the sophomores and new district students through the line and back to their classes quickly and efficiently. The district will notify you by mail if your student requires further evaluation by a physician.

Eleni Dalis and Bob Wunder for safeguarding the PTO's financial health. Thank you, Eleni, for managing our mid-year budget process and ongoing revenues and expenses. Thank you, Bob, for conducting our mid-year audit and ensuring the PTO's books are in order.
