We are delighted to announce that Colin Day has been elected as a Council Member of ISPE to serve as a Director on the Institute's Council of Management.
The Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers was established in 1978 to provide a central organisation for all individuals actively engaged in the practice of design, construction and maintenance of swimming pools, within the building, civil engineering and allied construction industries.
The Institute's aims are to promote and establish unrestricted co-operation and liaison between all persons actively involved in the swimming pool industry, to provide education and training and opportunities for association and interchange of thought and experience among the members and their colleagues. This is achieved by means of our One-Day Seminars, Workshops, Home Study Course, Publications and via the quarterly ISPE Magazine.

The Splash
Volume 1, 2014
|
Dear ,
It's hard to believe it is already 2014 and time for the first volume of The Splash. It seems that London 2012 has only just finished but now the winter Olympics are just around the corner. We don't tend to get so excited about the winter games since there are no pools to be tested, but we do wish everyone all the best for Sochi.
The start of the New Year is always a very busy time for the Lovibond® Leisure Water Team with two major industry events on our doorstep. Both SPATEX and the Pool & Spa Expo offer the perfect opportunity to come and meet us in person (it's not too scarey), so we hope we'll see you at one of the shows.
In this edition too, our friend Allen Wilson again "speaks out" - this time on the fascinating issue of Phosphates driven by new European Directives. You can't afford to not read this - or react to it. Be Phosphate Aware.

It's Show Time
SPATEX 2014 kicks off the year for the Lovibond® Leisure Water Team . It provides us with the first real opportunity to catch up with friends in an informal atmosphere where we can educate on the importance of pool and spa water testing! The inimitable Colin Day (MISPE) will also be presenting on Monday, 3 February, at the workshops and demonstrations.
So don't miss out on the opportunity to learn more in Coventry and discuss the latest in new products for the pool and spa season. Visit
Stand 425 to meet the team and see our product range for 2014.
The UK Pool and Spa Expo attracted a new audience to the Lovibond® stand in 2013 and we look forward to returning to the NEC in February to announce the very latest news on the leisure product range. As experts in pool & spa water analysis, we are always looking for new protégés to train and guide through the importance of good practice in testing the water. Please come by Stand 625 to meet the team and receive your free Guide, free Log Book and free Guidelines for your pool and spa.
If you aren't able to make either of these events but would still like to speak to us in person, feel free to get in touch and we'll arrange a visit. |
Allen Wilson Speaks Out
Why are water companies adding phosphates?
To comply with EC directive 80/778/EEC that demands that drinking water contain less than10ug/l of lead by December of this year. To understand this there are a 1000 ug/l in a mg/L or ppm in old money.
Already I am dealing with pools that are experiencing problems with higher than previous chlorine demands and outbreaks of Algae. This is because Phosphates are already being added by the water companies and these are basically fertilisers and encourage the growth of Algae. The pool operator then uses more chlorine to kill the algae and these results in unacceptable high levels of combined chlorine
How can you tell if you have a phosphate issue? No problem: Get it tested with a good test kit or alternatively send it to me (in a container obviously). There are digital test kits available that are very accurate and are very simple to use. There are also the traditional styles of 'color comparator' test that will usually measure up to 1000ppb. The accuracy of these tests is not as good as a digital meter and they are not as useful if your phosphate level is greater than 1000ppb, but they can be used as a starting point in diagnosing a phosphate problem.
My best advice when it comes to phosphates is to not ignore them and not to let them get out of hand. Treat them aggressively and remove them. It is far easier to balance your pool and keep it clean, clear and hygienic when you do not have a phosphate load.
