Dear Southernites:
The first quarter of 2016 has started off with lots of changes. The state swore in a new governor and new legislators, and the Jaguar Nation filled two top leadership positions. Last month, the Board of Supervisors selected Dr. Rodney Ellis as the chancellor of our Shreveport campus, and it selected Interim Chancellor John Pierre as the new chancellor of the Law Center last Friday. I only briefly met Dr. Ellis, but he appears to be a very good choice. I have known Chancellor Pierre for many years. I don't think you can find a person more dedicated to the Law Center. He has poured his heart and soul into the school. I am confident he will tirelessly work for the students, faculty and alumni of this fine institution. Congratulations to our two new leaders.
Unfortunately, Dr. Victor Ukpolo stepped down as chancellor of the New Orleans campus. He has served the campus for more than 10 years and has decided to return to Nigeria. I had a fantastic time working with Chancellor Ukpolo last year to p

ass legislation for our New Orleans and Baton Rouge campuses. I wish him and his family all the best in their future endeavors.
Yesterday, the governor announced that Southern and higher education would NOT be cut further this fiscal year to fill the state's $70 million deficit. This is great news! I can't thank you enough for your letters, phone calls and emails to legislators during the special session. Your voices were definitely heard. But, we are not out of the woods yet. Unfortunately, the state is still facing a $700 million deficit for the upcoming fiscal year that begins July 1st.
Next week, we will again have the opportunity to show the state we support our alma mater. Thursday is Southern University System Day at the Capitol. Our advocacy for Southern is working. The legislature responded to our huge turnout last year for this annual event. A month ago Southern students, faculty, staff, and alums dominated the crowd for the student-led Higher Education Day at the Capitol. On Friday, we wrap up the week with Alumni Pride Day. The Human Jukebox will lead a parade around campus. There will be a rally and a reception at the Donald Wade House. Come out Thursday and Friday, and show your pride for Southern!
I'm particularly proud of all the hard work and creativity of our chapters around the state and the country. Yesterday, I participated in the filming of a commercial for the Home Chapter's May 7th Crawfish Boil and Music Festival. Yep, it's that time of year. All across the country, Louisiana cuisine is starting to make its way to Bashes and Boils and Festivals. I can already taste the crawfish and crabs and can hear the music playing. In fact, on this Good Friday, I think I'll get an early start with my family and hope you are doing the same!
Happy Easter!
