SUAF President's Message
Dear Southernites:

Many of you should have received a postcard or email from me this week through a vendor the Federation has retained to help us update our membership records. We are producing a new membership directory and want to have your current contact information so that we can continue to keep you informed and engaged. Please respond to the correspondence and help us get the most accurate information possible. You will also be offered an opportunity to purchase a new directory. I think you will really enjoy the new publication. And, as always, please pay your dues and join the Federation, if you are not a member.

Louisiana students are calling on us to bring the HEAT. The Council of Student Body Presidents and students across Louisiana are bringing, Higher Education All Together (HEAT), for a rally in support of higher education on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. The rally begins at noon on the steps of the Louisiana State Capitol. I like this kind of student-led solidarity. The Human Jukebox is scheduled to perform, and we will hear from higher ed leaders from the four university systems. Please join us Wednesday in support of our students on the steps of the Capitol!

The Louisiana Legislature is wrapping up its first week of the Special Session, and the budget crisiscontinues to have higher education in the crosshairs of massive budget cuts. Students across Louisiana are worried about campus closures, reduced class offerings, and termination of degree programs. In the House Appropriations Committee this week, there was much discussion about consolidating schools and programs to save money. Fortunately, the Commissioner of Higher Education, Dr. Joseph Rallo, and the four System Presidents were able to provide important facts to debunk many of the myths surrounding higher education. Our education leaders explained to the Appropriations Committee that with Louisiana having one of the lowest postsecondary education attainment rates in the country, we need to strengthen our existing universities, not eliminate them.   Please continue to contact legislators and let them know you support higher education. Again, contact information for legislators and a sample letter are provided here in News and Notes.

The local bar associations also came together in solidarity this week to celebrate Black History Month. Wednesday was the joint bar luncheon of the Baton Rouge Bar Association, the Baton Rouge Association of Women Attorneys (BRAWA), the Louis A. Martinet Legal Society (the African-American bar association) and the Federal Bar Association. It brought back lots of fond memories of when I served as President of the Martinet Society in 1999 & 2000, and later as Baton Rouge Bar President in 2011. Our new Federal Magistrate Judge, Erin Wilder-Doomes, the first African-American female to be appointed in the Middle District of Louisiana, was one of the guest speakers. It was a proud moment to hear her speak. In Baton Rouge, there are five city court judges. For years, two of them were African American. A few months ago, the city elected its third African-American city court judge, SULC graduate Tarvald Smith. Judge Smith is our only SULC graduate on the bench and we are so very proud of him.

In these uncertain times, it is great to see so many Louisianians coming together. This unity really embraces the spirit of Black History Month. Not to sound cliché, but there is substantial evidence that indeed "w
