SUAF President's Message
Dear Southernites:
This Sunday is not only special because it is Valentine's Day, but also because it is the beginning of the special

session of the Louisiana Legislature. Last night, Governor Edwards discussed Louisiana's budget crisis in a televised State of the State address. The governor said that "without legislators approving new revenue this special session, some campuses will be forced to declare financial bankruptcy, which would include massive layoffs and the cancellation of classes." Please see his full speech at gov.louisiana.gov. I certainly recognize the incredible challenge Governor Edwards and the Legislature are facing.
According to both the Governor and State Treasurer John Kennedy, the fiscal policies of the last eight years have failed. This included massive cuts to higher education. Surely, Louisiana will not continue to make the same mistake. Dismantling our colleges and universities further is a huge mistake and will be devastating for the future of Louisiana. A crippled higher education system will deter new business development and cause our best and brightest faculty and students to leave our state. I again urge you to immediately contact the Speaker of the House, the President of the Senate, and your local legislators. Go to legis.louisiana.gov. Ask them to continue to support Southern and higher education during the special session, and the regular session that will follow. I've attached a sample letter for you to use. Please sign and send it, or prepare your own. Please also join our Federation at sualumni.org/join.
