Celebrate Black History
Month, with this piece of SU Alumni History!

SUAF President's Message
Dear Southernites:
As advertised, the Black History Month Reception honoring Governor John Bel Edwards' newly-appointed African-American cabinet members and local Baton Rouge leaders was phenomenal. Home Chapter President Cortny Jarrell and Chapter member Michelle McCalope did a spectacular job organizing the event. I tip my hat to all of the members of the chapter and the Federation who participated in the planning and organization of this proud moment in history.
Louisiana, university and alumni leaders at Mumford Stadium Field House
The third floor of the Field House was beautifully decorated in Blue and Gold with Mumford Stadium lit up in the background. The scoreboard flashed through the night welcoming the huge crowd of Jaguar family, friends and supporters. With the Special Legislative Session beginning on February 14th, the reception was a great opportunity to network with many of Louisiana's leaders. Special thanks to our Chairman of the SU Board of Supervisors, Dr. LeonTarver, for participating in our program and helping us organize the event. We are grateful to President-Chancellor Dr. Ray Belton for giving remarks and allowing us to host the program on our beautiful campus.

While we pause during Black History Month to celebrate the growing diversity of leadership in high-level positions in Louisiana government, we do so with a continued spirit of inclusion of all people. The beauty of the Jaguar family is that we come in all colors, hues, religions, shapes and sizes.   At our core, we are not simply Black, White, Brown,Yellow or Red, but rather we are Blue and Gold, through and through. It was moving to see the Jaguar family come together through our University, Alumni
President Castille with Home Chapter President Cortny Jarrell and Chapter Member Michelle McCalope at Louisiana Leaders Reception
Federation, and Foundation leadership. I was especially pleased to see Foundation Board members Allison Young, Bill Tucker andAllen Semien supporting our new Louisiana leaders. I knew for certain the event was a huge successwhen SU Board of Supervisors members, Ann Smith and Pat Magee, drove in from Kentwood and Lafayette to attend the reception!

The reception was truly a star-studded affair with all four African-American secretaries attending: Dr. Chuck Carr Brown, Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality; Attorney Kimberly Robinson, Secretary of the Department of Revenue; Dr. Shawn Wilson, Secretary of the Department of Transportation and Development; and Ms. Ava Dejoie, Executive Director of the Workforce Commission (formerly referred to as Secretary of the Department of Labor). Home Chapter members, Deputy Chief of Staff Johnny Anderson and Director of Constituent Services Kim Farris LaCour, attended and proudly boasted of their Chapter membership and love for Southern. Alumni Federation General Counsel and President of the SU Law Center Alumni Chapter, State Representative Ted James attended, along with Attorney Erin Monroe Wesley, who is Special Counsel to the Governor and an SU Law Center Alumni Chapter member. Assistant Commissioner of the Division of
Home Chapter Members at Black History Month Program honoring Louisiana leaders
Administration Desiree' Honore' Thomas, who comes from a huge family of Southernites, was among our honorees. Newly-elected Senator Regina Barrow, along with State Representatives Patricia Smith and Ed Price, were there as well. We also had the pleasure of hosting Metro Council Members, Donna Collins Lewis, Tara Wicker and Erika Green. What an amazing line-up of honorees!

The event would not have been successful without the help of our faithful sponsors: Rodney Braxton and Kevin Cunningham of Southern Strategy Group; Ryan Haynie of Haynie and Associates; Stasha Rhodes of The Red Team; and Mechanical Contractors.

Feeling proud, Jags & Knights!
