SUAF President's Message
Dear Southernites:

A couple weeks ago, I appeared on the The Tailgate Talk Show with host Tonja Myles and Senator Sharon Weston Broome. We had a great conversation about higher education and economic development surrounding the Southern University community in North Baton Rouge. Please check out the economic development segment. [click link] I really enjoyed the show!

"What they see is what they'll be" is the motto of the 100 Black Men of America. Last Friday, THE 100 hosted its 2016 Gala Celebration here in Baton Rouge. It was a star-studded affair with socialites and dignitaries from all over Louisiana. Governor John Bel Edwards attended and spoke to the crowd packed into the L'Auberge Hotel ballroom. For me, the best part of the Gala was that my young man, Preston III, attended. He got to rub elbows with the state's movers and shakers. He watched relationships being formed and cultivated. He observed new business and community partnerships develop. He even had a chance to talk to our new governor. It was that moment that I was again reminded of our organization's motto: "what they see is what they'll be." I admire THE 100 and what it stands for: strong men, not just talking about change, but being the change. Kudos to President Michael Victorian, Gala Chair Michael Adams, and all the men of
THE 100.

Not to be out done by the men of THE 100, Home Chapter President Cortny Jarrell and chapter member Michelle McCalope have been working on an exciting event. To kick off Black History Month, the Home Chapter and the Federation have teamed up to host a reception on campus, Wednesday, February 3
rd, to honor many of the Governor's new African-American appointees, including: Dr. Chuck Carr Brown, Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality; Dr. Shawn Wilson, Secretary of the Department of Transportation; Attorney Kimberly Robinson, Secretary of the Department of Revenue, Ms. Ava Dejoie, Executive Director of the Workforce Commission; Mr. Johnny Anderson, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor; Attorney Erin Monroe Wesley, Special Counsel to the Governor; Ms. Desiree' Honore' Thomas, Assistant Commissioner of the Division of Administration; and Ms. Kim Farris LaCour, Director of Constituent Services. Wow! To have all eight of these prominent leaders on our Baton Rouge campus at one time is phenomenal! And, what an impressive team of leaders! The very top of state government is truly starting to look like the rest of the State of Louisiana, i.e, a diverse and talented group of Americans!

Chapter's all across America are similarly hosting great events. Tomorrow, Marian and I head to Houston for the Chapter's 41st Annual Mardi Gras Gala. This is one of the Chapter's premier fundraisers. Our Houston Jaguars continue to not only be one of our largest chapters in the country, but also one of the most innovative. The Houston Chapter was a leader in our National Student Recruitment Initiative last year that led to a 30% increase in freshman enrollment. Regional Director and Chapter President Tracey Taylor Jarrell tapped Vikki Berry to become our Texas Regional Student Recruiter early in 2015. Texas then recruited the largest number of freshmen of all states, outside of the State of Louisiana, this past Fall. With the help of Bob Ford and Pamela LeBrane, the Houston Chapter is now leading the way in the creation of our new National Student Retention Initiative. Great things most certainly come from the State of Texas!

What a great way to start 2016!
