SUAF President's Message
National Officers Janet St. Cyr Moore, Preston Castille, LaQuitta Thomas, Macqueline Joseph, and James Mahomes at Unification Prayer Breakfast
Dear Southernites:
Scott's Bluff is overflowing with school spirit this week.   Homecoming activities are in full swing. College friends are reuniting. And, the excitement about the Jags making another run at the SWAC title is uncontainable. So far, I've attended the art exhibit, fashion show, and Miss Southern's Coronation. Yesterday, I began the morning the best way I know how: in prayer at the Federation's Unification Prayer Breakfast   The choir sang, the harpist played, and the ministers prayed. Community leaders, faculty members, administrators, alumni and students came together from all over the city, state and country. Rev. Joe R. Gant, Jr. delivered a powerful message about the frailty and the power of our beloved alma mater. He likened our institution to a ship and gave us a spiritual plan to help it stay afloat during these stormy times.   He said we all must come together in unity if Southern is to not only survive, but thrive as the turbulent winds of change continue to blow.
Our System Foundation has been doing an amazing job all week raising money as the Million Dollar March is coming to a close for this year. Please donate to our Student Recruitment Program if you haven't already done so. Today, at 1:00 Alums will gather for our Town Hall meeting in the Moot Court Room at the Law School. After an incredibly successful year in FY 2014, the Town Hall is our chance to discuss the progress we've made so far and our strategy for the new fiscal and academic school year. We intend to build on our spirit of unity and collaboration to steer our ship in the right direction. Tonight, the fun continues as we will come together again for our Annual Alumni Roundup in the Smith-Brown Memorial Union. Please join us! And, please don't forget to vote early. Tomorrow is the last day to do so.
Our institution is drawing national attention for so many positive reasons. Indeed, a crew will be on campus tomorrow filming a documentary. Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Historically Black Colleges and Universities is an upcoming documentary that will feature the significance of HBCUs throughout the entire span of their existence from the late 19th century to the present day. The two-hour film is being produced by Firelight Films (http://firelightmedia.tv) and will be broadcast on the PBS series Independent Lens in 2017. The Producer/Director, Marco Williams, and the production team will be here for Homecoming. They are interested in speaking with anyone who was involved with or witnessed the 1972 student protests on campus that resulted in the police killing Denver Smith and Leonard Brown. We appreciate Firelight Films including our alma mater in this important documentary. If you have any information that can be helpful to the film, please contact the production coordinator, Stacey Holman at 917-541-8282.
Waive at us in the parade in the morning. Join us at our tailgate spot by the Nursing School tomorrow afternoon. And, help us cheer on our team to victory against the PV Panthers.
Happy Homecoming, Jags!
