Dear Southernites:
The Jaguars had given a valiant effort in the first half of the game. The score had remained relatively close given the anticipated mismatch. David was getting in a few licks against Goliath. And then the third quarter started. Goliath began to flex its muscles, and the Bulldogs began to pull away from the Jags. I decided to walk over to the opposite side of the field, take a look around Sanford Stadium's 93,000 seats and grab a snack. I walked out with my popcorn and thought we were in the middle of a long TV timeout. Then I realized something awful had just happened. The coaches and medical team were all huddled around Devon Gales as he lay on the football field. Minutes later, he was carted away on a stretcher. Devon is about the same age as my son, and the worst fears of a parent began to run through my mind.
As you know by now, Devon suffered a serious spinal injury and was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center. His parents were called and then flown to the hospital. I could only imagine what the conversation felt like and the agony of the flight to Athens. Devon had successful spinal surgery and was transferred earlier this week to the Shepherd Center, a rehabilitation hospital, in Atlanta. His injury is a reminder that life is oh so fragile, and we should cherish every moment we have with our loved ones. The University, Federation, and Foundation have been working on providing the appropriate assistance to the family. With the advice and leadership of Coach Banks and Coach Odums, the Foundation launched the Devon Gales Fund so that alums and supporters can donate money to the family. The University has stood supportively at Devon and his family's side; and we, the Alumni, stand ready to help the family in any way we can to assist and share his progress with the Jaguar Nation.
