Be Alert for Fake CP 2000 Notices
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a warning to taxpayers and tax professionals about fraudulent IRS CP 2000 notices being sent via email by criminal scammers. The fake notices are attached to the email and appear to be issued from an Austin, Texas address. The fraudulent CP 2000 notices are purportedly related to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and request payment by checks made out to the "I.R.S."

The IRS does not make initial contact with taxpayers via email or social media. Genuine CP 2000 notices are only sent through the U.S. mail, and payment requests are asked to be made out to "United States Treasury."

IRS Notice CP 2000 (Notice of Proposed Adjustment for Underpayment/Overpayment) is the most common notice sent out by the IRS, and is used to alert taxpayers that the IRS has detected a difference in the income, deductions, credits and payments reported on the taxpayer's return and the numbers calculated by the IRS using the W-2, 1098, 1099 and other informational returns filed by companies.

If you believe you have received this scam via email, the IRS recommends forwarding it to phishing@irs.gov, then deleting it from your account.
