In response to a sharp increase in reported telephone-based phone scams, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will no longer initially contact taxpayers by telephone when scheduling audits.
Prior to this policy change, IRS agents have often called an individual taxpayer or company representative to schedule an initial appointment to discuss an audit. The new policy will be for the agent to contact the taxpayer by letter first, then follow up with a phone call.
With this change, it is more clear than ever that anyone calling and representing themselves as an IRS agent, demanding payment or personal information, is likely involved in fraudulent activity.
If you feel you have been the victim of a fraudulent phone scam regarding taxes, please contact Gray, Gray & Gray's Tax Department at (781) 407-0300.
