Mass. Tax Status Certification Deadline is April 1

The Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) requires any corporation (or business entity taxable as a corporation) to certify their tax status on an annual basis. This year's deadline for this certification to be submitted is April 1, 2016.

You can certify your corporate tax status online at: MassTaxConnect

Once on the website, go to Submit Annual Certification of Entity Tax Status to open the online application. Once the application is completed, you will receive a reply from MassTaxConnect with a Certification Confirmation Code and a Certification Confirmation Number.

The reason for the annual tax status certification is to qualify corporations for federal and state tax purposes. Your company will be entered in the state's Corporations Book, which is used by local tax assessors and can lead to various property tax exemptions. If you miss the deadline and are not included in the Corporations Book you may not receive local personal property tax exemptions to which you are entitled.

Not all businesses must file a tax status. Entities not required to file include:
  • Entities that do not own real or personal property in Massachusetts as of January 1, 2016
  • Non-profit corporations
  • Sole-proprietors
