Tax Season May Be Over, But Scams Continue

IRS Scam
If you have successfully filed your tax return you might think you can relax a bit. But we were reminded this week that criminals do not take any time off. Online and phone scams aimed at stealing your personal and financial information continue to be a plague.

Need an example? We received an inquiry from a client who was puzzled by a recorded phone message she received. It warned the client that the "IRS" was filing a lawsuit against her for non-payment of taxes. They did not address the client by name, but left a call back phone number.

Our advice? Do NOT call the number. This appears to be a scam using the sensitive nature and complex issues of taxes to prey upon unsuspecting taxpayers. The IRS will almost never make first contact with a taxpayer by telephone or email, but will use a mailed letter instead. We recommended that the client report the contact through the IRS website (www.irs.gov).

This is an important lesson for all taxpayers. Even though tax season is over, do not let your guard down against scammers seeking to take advantage of you. Continue to be on alert for online and telephone thieves who claim to be the IRS.
