Beware: Fake Tax Lien Notices in Massachusetts

Warning A number of Massachusetts taxpayers who have outstanding tax liens have received settlement notices that were NOT issued by the state's Department of Revenue (DOR). Although the tax liens mentioned in the notices are real, the DOR did not send the notices out and would not suggest a settlement amount via e-mail.

Taxpayers should not respond to these bogus notifications or send any money to "settle" the tax lien. Instead, report any suspicious notice to the DOR by calling (617) 887-6367.

The Department of Revenue has posted samples of the bogus notices on their website.

This is yet another example of the many tax-related on-line scams which pose a threat to legitimate taxpayers. For more information on this or other tax questions, please contact us.

We go beyond the numbers by delivering insight, guidance and success to our clients.
