Tax Refund Scam Looks Like
Real
IRS Communication

Tax season is in full swing and that means scam artists are also very active. We were alerted to the latest online scam by a vigilant client who received the following e-mail that looked like an official IRS document, right down to the simulated IRS logo:

This is not a legitimate communication from the IRS, but an attempt to lure recipients into clicking on the website link, which may result in their e-mail account being hacked or "phished," and potentially exposing their private information. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers via e-mail, but will send you a letter through the U.S. Mail or telephone you directly.

If you receive an e-mail similar to this one, do not click through to the website indicated. Instead, forward the e-mail to [email protected], or contact the Internal Revenue Service at 1-800-908-4490.

It is extremely important to be alert and aware of scams like this at this time of year. A good rule of thumb is to follow the old adage, "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is." We go beyond the numbers by delivering insight, guidance and success to our clients.
