On summer vacations we revel in the joys of life, then returning to the "real world" can cause a slump. Researchers call it Post Vacation Syndrome (PVS). Some people experience irritability, lack of motivation, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, and/or feelings of emptiness.

Vacations lift our spirits, giving us a taste of doing the things we love, reminding us of what is truly important in our lives. But the effects don't always last after we reenter our frenetic life styles again.

Some people feel discouraged, recalling all the things they were going to accomplish in the summer, then sadly admit they did not paint the house, or organize 10 years of photographs, or lose 20 pounds.

Parents, after surviving the chaos of back to school planning and shopping, reenter the frenzy of chauffeuring and multi-scheduling. Empty nesters may feel a sense of loss as passing school buses remind them of a part of their lives gone by.

Lessons from LeAnn

As autumn approaches some may feel like nature and their lives are changing. Shorter days with less sunlight reduce the amount of vitamin D from sunshine, a building block of serotonin, a chemical in our brains responsible for maintaining mood balance.

To get a vacation reboot this autumn, try these tips:
  • Get some exercise, preferably outdoors.
  • Enjoy fall activities like raking leaves or picking pumpkins.
  • Take brisk walks, breathing deeply the crisp fresh air.
  • Learn something new. Take a class. Try a new fall recipes.
  • Schedule down time, play time, visits with friends.
  • Make time for family, nurturing closeness.
  • Mark your calendars now for mini vacations and fun throughout the year.
Autumn can be a season of renewal. Embrace the change. Let it empower you. And revel once again in the joys of life.
