From the Station Manager
Berthold Reimers

Dear WBAI Family,

I am pleased to announce that WBAI continues to take steps towards stabilizing its affairs. We have caught up on a number of major bills such as severance pay, and rent. Our BAI Buddy continues to increase as we are reaching the $20,000.00 mark per month. Please become a BAI Buddy ..... and help us to reduce the number of on-air drive days. Click here to sign up for your automatic monthly contribution.

However, we still face some daunting issues. The monthly rent for the antenna on top of the Empire State Building is approximately $55,000.00 per month and with the yearly increase will reach about $72,000.00 in 3 years. WBAI management with the support of the PAcifica National Office have begun to take steps to solve this problem.

Further, the same layoff measures that allowed us to survive have also impacted programming. Programming needs a re-evaluation and it is my duty and responsibility, in the absence of a Program Director and a Public Affairs Director, to make what I deem to be the necessary changes. We have many programming changes and events coming this month...please see what is happening at WBAI below.

- Looking forward to continue working towards a better WBAI.

Interns + Volunteers
Intern of the Month: Jay Ackerman

This summer WBAI is hosting 8 interns from schools all over the country and Europe. Interns each work with a producer learning the ins + outs of producing a show, help with
Jay Ackerman
administrative tasks, learn social networking and web posting, create on- air promotions and this summer they will each be producing a 5 minute segment that will air on Fridays during the 6:30 news time slot.

Each intern will do a segment about a topic of local interest to them that we might not hear about in the news, but is important to them. WBAI is very appreciative of the interns and impressed by their knowledge of politics, commitment to helping support WBAI, and absorbing the expense to travel to our offices- several commuting from pretty far away!

Jay Ackerman, who is a student at Fredonia University majoring in Sound Engineering, is assisting Kim Massengill on Thump and Growl.  Kim's early feedback about Jay," THANK YOU for Jay. He's a %#$$$ delight. I'm excited about the things we're going to work on this summer. LOVE my new intern! Smart, funny, full of life, digs my show. Knowledgable about activism and counterculture...I hope the world is ready for him when he's ready for it." Jay will also be assisting Out - FM with social networking.

Volunteer of the Month: Jack Shalom
Jack Shalom

Jack Shalom worked full time for the NYC Department of Education for the last 20 years. Now a part-timer, he spends the rest of his time volunteering, tutoring, acting, doing close-up magic, and writing. He first listened to WBAI 45 years ago on his transistor radio hidden under his bed covers. Sorry, Mom, now it can be told!

At WBAI, I answer phones to help members resolve premium problems, keep the BAI Buddy lists up to date, and solicit input from Buddies about the station. All in all, it's great to be around such creative, politically aware, committed people.  I am also organizing the WBAI Online Stoop Sale. This is a way for listeners to donate worthwhile premiums of their own for other listeners.  For example, I'm donating five packages of three one-hour sessions of close-up magic lessons. Stay tuned for further info on this.

VOLUNTEER @ WBAI
WBAI relies on a substantial team of talented volunteers to help support our staff. They are an integral part of our operations. As a volunteer you can help with mailing out thank-you gifts, filing, organizing, stuffing envelopes and data entry.

Help is needed at live events, making phone calls to collect pledges and doing research.

Have a specific skill? Let us know.

Listener Commentary

It's worrying to wonder whether Wbai programming decision makers may be unclear about the number of loyal and engaged music programming listeners. How can this be remedied? I am a Wbai Buddy, and have been an ongoing supporter of Democracy Now! for ages. Besides Democracy Now! and a couple other news / news commentary programs, Thump & Growl, along with the other stellar music programming on Wbai, is my other radio staple.

I listen religiously and interact online with other music programming listeners via Facebook every chance I get. This experience figures importantly in my week and I share the wealth with my sizeable personal and professional network, passing on recommendations (via links to music program archives), all the time. I want the powers that be at Wbai to know that. I would be devastated if the music went away, as would a great many others of your total listenership.

What Kimberly Massengill and her colleagues are doing with music on Wbai is nowhere else (that I know of). Wbai music programming makes my Wbai listening experience so much richer and more well rounded. Who can I and others like me talk to, to impress upon Wbai the vital and integral nature of the music shows in maintaining an engaged listenership; and importance of music, in cinching a complete radio experience? Is anyone listening? Please let me and other loyal listeners know how we can get this message across most effectively to ensure that music programming continues to occupy a prominent role in Wbai's offerings.

Sincerely,

Lisa Sabath NYC

Re: The Personal Computer Show

Thanks for a great show and the effort that goes into it!

Love the segments that give info, variety and focus along with a break from the multiple interruptions that sometimes make it hard for this old geek to follow. Helps my brain rest up for the POP/PUSH stack fest during the rest of the program. Thanks for preparing them and sharing.

Thanks for continuing on in the midst of trying circumstances.

Dear Michael G. and WBAI friends,

WBAI is normally so clear about matters of war and peace, but the repeated interviews Karen Gerson of Kesher are an exception.

She has an innocent-sounding,  little-girl voice, but  her politics are poison She goes on and on about "Russian propaganda" as if US corporate media coverage of the Ukraine crisis were not propaganda. She blames the Ukraine crisis on Russia. Notice it's the same line as the US government ?

She is apparently blind, or willfully blind,  to the fact  the US and EU picked this fight by overthrowing the elected Ukraine government a few months ago and installing ultra nationalists and fascists It is part of the plan to move NATO right up to the Russian border.

NATO has been creeping closer to the Russian border since the 1990s. I wouldn't be surprised if Kesher were funded by National Endowment for Democracy. Neo-con Victoria Nuland said the US government had spent $6 billion  in Ukraine "on democracy promotion."

I tuned in late today, but I heard no mention of the events in  Odessa. The pro Ukraine government fascists torched a trade union building  and forty people burned to death, or were asphyxiated.Democrats don't torch trade union buildings. Odessa is  historically a very Jewish city. Chances are good some of those forty people were Jewish. I  didn't hear her

express concern about that.
