WBAI Family,

The power to save WBAI is in your hands.

Here we are in July contemplating what seems to be the end of our rope. I have received numerous correspondences from concerned listeners and members urging me to do all I can to preserve WBAI as it is right now.

WBAI as it exists right now will not be preserved because it can not survive under the current financial model. However, WBAI will continue to exist as a local NY metropolitan area radio station.

We were making real progress in meeting our obligations until the confluence of factors that came together in the past year that include Hurricane Sandy and the changing of Program Directors.

So, where do we go from here? WBAI has been one of the most successful Pacifica stations raising money outside of on-air drives. Management and staff have worked relentlessly to reduce on-air fund drive days. Two major events, one with Dr. Michio Kaku and the other with Chris Hedges, raised $90,000.00 and $12,000.00 respectively. Our first art auction netted over $40,000.00 followed by a mini auction that raised another $3,000.00. Our grant efforts raised about $50,000.00 not withstanding the regular stringer grants of $30,000.00. We also raised over $15,000.00 in matching grants. WBAI revamped our website that has increased our profile and exposure and thereby increased our website income tremendously.

However, WBAI's most significant accomplishment has been the launching of the BAI Buddy initiative. In an effort to reduce on-air fund drives we asked you, our listeners and members, to join as a BAI Buddy and become a sustained monthly donor. About 800 of you have responded to our call and it is generating approximately $12,000.00 per month.

Let me emphasize that ultimately the well being of WBAI rests with you, our listeners and members. If our 15,000 active members donated at least $15.00 per month thru the BAI Buddy program, we could generate $225,000.00 per month and reduce on-air funddrives by 2/3rds instantly. Our programming may not be as compelling to you as it used to be because of interruptions by funddrives, but a reduction in contributions has a direct impact on our ability to focus on the important programming that WBAI provides.

So, to all of you who asked me to save WBAI, I am giving you the solution and the power to do just that, right now.  Click on the BAI Buddy Button below and subscribe to donate $15.00 per month or more. I can see the results almost immediately and make the case to the Pacifica National Office that we can continue to be a viable, sustainable entity.

Sincerely,

Berthold Reimers

Announcing Two New Programs:

NEW MUSIC : TURN IT UP, TECLA!  Thursdays 10am to noon

This program is designed for audiences who are interested in mixed genres of music that is alternative to the mainstream norm. Tecla Esposito is a female musician who was classically trained in piano, studied Ethnomusicology in college, and has been involved in various musical ensembles, as well as my own self-produced projects, since college.

She has traveled around the world playing music, and upon returning from her travels,  noticed a void in FM radio's portrayal of local and world youthful alternative pop music.

When thinking of popular music, one always thinks of the mainstream top 40 billboard charts.  Tecla's goal is to expose the avid music listener who seeks alternatives to dance, funk, instrumental, new wave, electronic, lyrical, live music from all over the world, including right here in New York City.

Mike Sargent started his career in theater and film as a sound designer. He was nominated several times for the prestigious Audelco Award for excellence in Sound Design. From there Mike went on to write, produce and direct radio drama and audio books, adapting the works of such acclaimed science-fiction authors as Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clark and has been the recipient of a series of grants to develop his feminist-science-fiction play Nemesis.

The music played here will open up a discussion of musical genre, history, and instrumentation for people seeking new music.  The discussion will be complemented by weekly musical guests who fit the alternative characteristics of the program, talk about their process, and perform a few songs live.

This program opens the minds of diverse listeners everywhere to various forms of fun, positive, uplifting music, intended for people to Turn It Up! It also expands the range of WBAI listeners to youthful alternative music fans looking for something new and fresh on FM radio.

INTERN OF THE MONTH: Stephanie Kossman
Stephanie Kossman

"I am a rising junior at Wellesley College where I study Religion. I love being a Religion major because it gives me the opportunity to learn about so many different faiths and beliefs, which are not only the source of many major world issues but also are the center of everyday life for many people.

My favorite part of Wellesley, however, is our campus radio station. I've been a part of WZLY since my first year as both a Radio DJ and executive board member. My love for WZLY inspired me to learn more about working at a radio station, and ultimately, I chose to intern with WBAI for the summer because I love the idea of education through radio. I can't believe that only a few months after starting first internship, I'm being named Intern of the Month! Thank you WBAI."

FAVORITE SHOW E-DONATION:

To Pacifica CEO Summer Reese:

I am writing to you because I am extremely concerned about the impending layoffs at WBAI.

Over the years, my appreciation for WBAI programming has grown by leaps and bounds.  In the current political climate, BAI is literally the ONLY station where the news is real and true.  Programs like Democracy Now, Law and Disorder, Guns and Butter, and 5 O'Clock Shadow have become necessary listening for anyone who wants to hear the truth about nukes, global warming, war crimes, US imperialism, torture, NSA surveillance, and just about everything else that the mainstream media, because of its corporate ownership, tiptoes around.  Where else will progressives be able to go?  This would truly be a monumental loss!

Progressives, peace activists, human rights activists, animal rights activists and pretty much everyone NEED to have WBAI remain the bastion of excellent reporting and discussion that it  has been for over 50 years.

Please examine your conscience.   Examine what Pacifica must do to save WBAI.   Provide CPB with what it needs in order to release the money that it is supposed to be giving you.   Please do it now.   Save WBAI.

A supportive listener and friend to WBAI,
-Barbara Balaban
Belleville, NJ

To 5'Oclock Shadow's Robert Knight:
Thank you for letting us hear these magnificent speeches by Nelson Mandela, as the great man himself approaches his passing. It is so important to me to hear his profound and uplifting words at this ultimate time for him. Thank you.
-Alice
