Dear WBAI Family,
A great many things have occurred since our last e-Newsletter. I will get straight to the point. Hurricane Sandy had a profoundly negative impact on our already precarious organization. Our FALL FUND DRIVE was cut short, our phone lines are still non-operational, and we were unable to use our broadcast facilities and offices for three weeks. We are truly in a disaster area and are still feeling the effects. In spite of these challenges we have still managed to: - Recover broadcasting ability immediately after the storm, only losing 14 hours of air time.
- Have a successful Art Auction despite a forced postponement.
- Continuously produce cutting edge news without an office or resources.
- Restore and maintain our web stream
- Provide post - hurricane updates through our website and Twitter posts.
- Resume the processing and mailing of overdue premiums and BAI Buddy packets.
We are in the final days of our rescheduled fund drive which is not doing well due to all the aforementioned factors. These issues made it difficult to coordinate and plan effectively. But on a positive note, in the midst of these difficulties, we managed to secure rent-free office space at 4 World Financial Center where our staff and news department will be stationed for at least six months. We have also managed to secure studio space in Harlem where we will broadcast from for a fraction of the $37,000.00 we are currently paying at 120 Wall Street. We will be somewhat inconvenienced but I believe these steps and sacrifices will help WBAI Rebuild, Recover and Recoup. I would like to thank you for your continuous support. We hope these measures will help reduce on-air fund drive days, produce programs that meet your needs, and act to stabilize WBAI financially. I urge you to continue supporting WBAI in this holiday season with your tax deductible contributions through REBOOT WBAI: GIVE NAME OF YOUR FAVORITE SHOW, Support the CAPITAL CAMPAIGN, or through BUY IT NOW HOLIDAY GIFTS: ARTWORK. |
WBAI Art Auction Continues

WBAI ART AUCTION :: ONLINE BIDDING UNTIL DEC. 20, 10PM EST
The WBAI Silent Art Auction was a resounding success. The Steven Kasher Gallery was filled to capacity from the time the doors opened until all attempts to end the night failed and gallery goers kept going! See pictures below. Attendees included NYC art world personalities, WBAI listeners, major donors, several LSB members, and total strangers to WBAI. Attesting to the power of our advertising, online bids came from as far away as Scotland and Germany. Though we had a successful evening, works are still available online, many at reduced rates and can be bid upon until Wednesday, DEC 20 at 10pm EST. WBAI is astounded by the LOVE expressed by both the artists who contributed their work but also by the many new friends and admirers who attended. Kudos go out to our curator Jim Wintner, of BENEFIT EVENTS, who's curatorial genius landed WBAI some amazing and historic donations of artwork. To Gary Null:
I am so grateful that all of us have you in our lives. For one small example, I imagine what it would have been like if I had done no mental and physical preparations for Hurricane Sandy. There was 6 feet of water in the ground floor of my Brooklyn building and, sadly, the businesspeople and artists lost everything there. The whole thing was shocking, even having been somewhat prepared. I am very fortunate to have suffered no losses and was able to leave the day before. I am muscular and healthy by following your programs. I was strong enough to start the generator when needed, since there was no power, where I was, for 6 days. It was minimally personally stressful due to having thought about these things from listening to your show. I am easily shocked, so it was important to be more ready. I think about what it would have been like if WBAI couldn't broadcast for that time. The kindness and latitude that you showed with WBAI after the difficulties you experienced there exemplifies peace and good will and working together and it helped all of us. Hearing BAI and hearing you working with them was one of those profoundly beautiful surprises while things were kind of dark. I was able to get to know BAI again a bit, since I didn't have internet access. I know you used your kitchens to cook van-loads of food for people downtown too, when there were no other resources for them. Each show that you present has as much information as 100 of some other shows. But the difference is that the scoop on your show is useful and prescient, due to your vast experience at packing your program with assimilable info from the most current reliable sources. I have enjoyed so many years of a needed daily check-in with common sense, activism, reality and friendships which have guided my life in the best ways. Today, I think of you and thank you so much. - Elaine
To Interim development Director, Andrea Katz: Your voice is wonderful and so was the Dylan song you played last night. I got to listen to it on the way home in rush hour traffic. Thank you for the most engaging [artists] interviews that you coordinated. - Allegra Harrington
I hear promos of celebrities who listen to WBAI. While these are inspiring, WBAI is made up of everyday individuals like you and me. And history is about all of us, not just celebrities or heroes.
Can we have promos by individuals? My idea is that if someone becomes a buddy they would have the opportunity to record why they support WBAI and that would be aired sometime during the day, perhaps a 2-3 times during the month (the frequency of course is flexible). I'm sure you can get some very inspirational messages that inspire others to contribute.
This is akin to an announcement that I hear where you have wbai promoted in all the different languages. Only that locks out many of us who only speak one or two common languages. I am not saying I want to hear myself on the air, but I know there are very eloquent common people who are contributing to keep WBAI on the air and I would enjoy hearing their voice. -Lizabeth Pardo
