From the Station Manager - Berthold Reimers

Dear WBAI Family,

I hope you are all safe in the aftermath of Sandy. I would like to give you a quick update on WBAI's own saga over the past few days. WBAI made 3 contingency plans that were challenged by the severity of the storm.

Many of WBAI staff members made a decision to stay at the studio and continue to broadcast until we lost electricity with the knowledge that they might be stranded for a few days. Management assured they were safe, had adequate food, and had a manager on site.

Our first plan was to make provisions for a power loss at 120 Wall Street. We installed a COMREX (Portable Broadcasting System) to our antenna on top of the Empire State Building. Other equipment was delivered to Chief Announcer's Michael G. Haskins home so that he could broadcast from there. This plan worked rather well as WBAI went back on the air 5 minutes after we lost power at 120 Wall Street.

Unfortunately, the signal at the Empire State Building became unavailable when Con Edison and Verizon experienced problems. We went off the air for a while as we waited for the Empire State Building to re-configure their system. We had two contingency plans for this scenario; the use of Gary Null's or Armand DiMele's studios. Unfortunately, Armand's office is located where the crane was dangling and therefore unreachable. We proceeded to set up WBAI staff to broadcast from Gary Null's studio using ISDN equipment.
Currently, we are broadcasting from Gary Null's location to the best of our ability as we do not expect to have access to our studio until later this week or longer. Our webstream was offline until Monday evening, which is now operating from Interim Director Andrea Katz's apartment and I  encourage you to use it by going to wbai.org.
Please also check our website for updates on information about FEMA, gas station availability, warming centers, and food and water distribution sites. I also encourage you to follow us on Twitter, @WBAIRadio, as well as our Facebook page. Social networking intern, Michael Holmes, has done an outstanding job of tweeting and posting on Facebook, to the appreciation of many listeners otherwise disconnected from information during the worst of the storm as well as many from as far away as Portugal, Australia, and Ireland.

Until we are able to return to our studios at 120 Wall St., Program Director Chris Hatzis is making every attempt  to bring you as many regular pre-recorded or live programs as we can.

We are pleased to announce that you, our listeners have been very supportive during this disturbing time and that pledges continued to be made online at give2wbai.org and in the form of BAI Buddies!
We lost many days of our most important Fall Fund Drive corresponding to about a $150,000.00 loss. The best way to make up for this loss without adding more fund drive days is by you, who have the ability to do so, becoming a BAI Buddy. To do so, please click here.

Delphine Blue L. and Elise Engler R.
Artist Elise Engler joined producer Delphine Blue, of Shocking Blue (Thurs. and Fri. 10am-noon) in the studio on September 21.

Elise visited Delphine bringing trays of colored pencils, drawing the contents of Delphine's handbag. The drawing is a donation to the WBAI ART AUCTION. Please click here to see the work.

Engler's work is documentary in nature, chronicling particular experiences by drawing/painting all of its components.

Most recently her work is the result of time spent in Antarctica as a grantee of the National Science Foundation's Antarctica Artists and Writers Program. She actually listened to WBAI when there.

Earlier projects have included drawing everything she owns, the contents of women's bags and an extensive series of drawings about the things purchased with our tax dollars. This large series of drawings includes depictions of everything in and on a fire truck, the contents of a government funded virology laboratory, the battered chairs in a public school classroom and the range of equipment used in Iraq.

Re a listener's complaint in your October E- Newsletter that there is no arts programming that would interest older, more thoughtful art patrons, I would highly recommend Janet Coleman and David Dozier's Cat Radio Cafe, on Mondays, at 2 p.m. or re-broadcasted online in the Archives..

I too, am a listener who goes back a long way (in my case to the Julius Lester days) and a painter interested in literature, dance, classical music, jazz and all visual arts. I find that CAt Radio Cafe has some of the wittiest and broad-ranging commentary on the arts that I can find on radio or TV. It includes deeply thoughtful poetry and interviews introducing to us the creators of innovative, vibrant, often off-beat theater productions). It is, besides, amusing and consistently clever in the hosts' own improvisational repartee. In sum, I would say to your listener: Try it; you might like it - a lot.

The stream is indeed working now, and it is so great to hear WBAI again. I am in Little Rock, Arkansas, and the webcast is the only way I can hear the station. (I grew up in NYC and used to listen the old way starting in the late 1960s, early 1970s.) Thank you for all the work you guys do over there. It's very much appreciated."XXXXXXXXX
