Welcome to our last newsletter of 2014. It's been a busy year, so you'll find this special December edition packed with student triumphs, great pieces of writing and messages from your tutors.

A special word of congratulations to our top students, whose achievements are a testament to what can be achieved if you're passionate about writing and willing to work hard.

A new year means a chance to start afresh and take advantage of new opportunities - so recharge your batteries in preparation for tackling 2015 with plenty of energy and enthusiasm.

Happy holidays to those of you who'll be having them, and for those who aren't so lucky, take the advice of American author Martha Beck: 'Rest until you feel like playing, then play until you feel like resting.'

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Next year is our 10th birthday, celebrating a decade of running the Writers' College. For us, this is a huge milestone.

As people have gained more confidence in online learning, and as our name has become established, we've seen steady increases in our student numbers. So thank you to all our students, past and present (and returning). Without your trust and positivity, we wouldn't be where we are now. Without your amazing testimonials, we wouldn't have the standing we enjoy. And without your enthusiasm, we wouldn't have a reason to continue developing our courses.

Some of our writing tutors have been with us since the beginning in 2005, and it's been reassuring to have their incredible expertise and support over the years. We love working with our amazing team of talented tutors! Thank you to them for sharing their knowledge so generously with you.

As always, we have some exciting new projects for 2015, while we continue to update our existing courses.

The experience we've gained over the last decade makes the next 10 years an exciting prospect. We look forward to another decade of training writers from all over the world, and wish each one of you the very best for the new year.

To round off 2014, we celebrate our 'top' everything: top student results, publishing achievements, courses and student writing. Enjoy the read.

CLOSING TIMES

The college is closed from Monday 15 December 2014, and we reopen on Monday 3 January 2015.

Great holiday reading:

* 'A writer, huh? Have I heard of anything you've written?' Here's how to turn this table on car salesmen, teachers and gastroenterologists.

* Here are over a hundred links to websites that provide free e-books on a huge variety of topics. Enjoy!

Aan al my hardwerkende studente van 2014: Baie dankie dat julle my met julle stories vertrou het. En ook met grepe uit julle lewens. Dit is vir my 'n voorreg.

Lees verder...

It has been an extraordinary year of outstanding work by students who are working on some amazing and diverse novel projects with huge potential. As a novel writing and literary short fiction tutor it has been a privilege and a joy to encounter students' wonderful imaginations manifesting in thrilling, enchanting, chilling, moving and insightful stories peopled with an array of  truly fascinating characters. Novel writing tutor David Jester

I've had a very eclectic range of students this year and have enjoyed working with all of them. They've all had different styles and many come from different backgrounds, but they share a common love for the written word and a desire to improve their writing.

This was my first year at the college after being drafted by Nichola at the beginning of February. I wasn't sure what to expect from my students and their levels of ability, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Some of my students are very close to the standard required not only to be a published author, but to be a successful freelance writer. Read more...

Writing Books for Children tutor Philippa Werry

Thanks to my students on the Writing Books for Children course for all their hard work. I am always impressed by how much time and effort you put into your study, especially when many of you are juggling paid and unpaid work, family commitments and busy households. I'm also fascinated to see how the same exercises and assignments in each Module can elicit such different and wildly imaginative responses. Read more...

Novel writing tutor Andrew Salomon

We all know time flies. At the beginning of the year this is something we are peripherally aware of but not concerned with at all. But at the end of the year, this obvious detail becomes an indisputable reality, along with the startling sense of 'Where on earth did the time go?' I thought I still had oodles of opportunities to paint the house, to learn how to surf or to speak Spanish, to finish that novel...

But instead of lamenting time's speedy nature, for the rest of 2014 and beyond I would like to be less concerned with time: instead I'd like to focus on writing and on doing so regularly. Stephen King advises us not to wait for inspiration; rather show up to write every day and the muse will know where to find you.

Short story writing tutor Ginny Swart

Hi to all my students - you romantic, chilling, horror, hilarious, and twisted short story writers! It's been interesting and often exciting to read all your assignments and watch as your writing talents have developed over the past year. I look forward to reading a lot more in 2015. Keep your keyboards going over Christmas because that's when inspiration for your next story might strike.

Poetry writing tutor Fiona Zerbst

Writing poetry is a deeply personal journey full of revelations. Every year, I am reminded of all the different reasons why people write - to recreate joy; to cope with depression; to find a counterpoint to their academic studies; to remember they are more than their jobs; to learn a new way of using language that will allow them to discover more about themselves. Whatever your reason for writing, be assured that it is valid, since poetry is as much about self-discovery as it is about art. Read more...

I have really been fortunate in my students. They constantly surprise me with their creativity and unusual story angles. I am also so proud of their hard work, their commitment to their chosen projects, and their determination to learn and improve upon the nuts and bolts of their writing. I also am very proud of my students who have continued to write despite life-altering changes and family sadness. Well done to all of you and I can't wait to see your finished novels.

Creative writing tutor Sonny Whitelaw

It's always exciting seeing students' work arrive in my inbox, because each submission reveals a world filled with imagination and potential. This year has been one of special achievements and milestones, of novel and short story students graduating and returning as advanced students, some being published and others winning awards. I am constantly impressed by the ability of students to take each new module to the next level, find their way out of deep dark plot holes, chase after characters who have wrested control of the story from them, and weave tangled threads into cohesive prose. It's a pleasure and a privilege working with every one of you. Read more...

MESSAGES FROM THE SPECIALIST WRITING TUTORS

Web writing tutor Karen Lotter

On the Web time moves very fast. What works today may be outdated tomorrow. This is one of the reasons why I am proud of my students.

Not only do they have to master the techniques for writing for the Web, and learn about Social media and blogging, they need to do all these at the same time and still keep flexible about changes on the Web. Read more ...

Writing coach and business writing tutor Susan Williams

I have had the privilege to tutor many motivated writing students this year. Some of them were already excellent writers who just needed a bit of direction, someone to believe in their ability to write and something to anchor their writing on. After the first few haltering steps, they spread their wings and flew! A few students were speakers of other languages, professionals who moved to countries other than their home countries where they had to converse and write in professional English. Yet some others were business people who never before had an interest in writing and had to learn how to present themselves and their businesses professionally. Read more ...

Copywriting tutor Mandy Speechly

There appears to be a growing interest in the field of copywriting, as I experienced a notable increase in students signing up for my course this year. Of course this isn't that surprising considering the demand for quality content in the media, hopefully something that stands out from all the banal advertising and cat videos! In fact, there couldn't be a better time to be working in the field of communication - and have the ability to write words that talk to the right people in the right way. Read more ...

One thing I have particularly enjoyed this year is getting to know you. It may seem odd, given the fact that we communicate across seas, at odd hours, and only via the computer screen. However, as you progress through the courses, our emails become more relaxed, more personal - and more entertaining. I want to congratulate you all for taking on the challenge of learning through this format. I can tell when you're struggling with the content, the demands on your time or a lack of confidence, and it's very rewarding for me when you respond with renewed commitment, negotiating each hurdle along the way. When you tell me how much you have learned, how much you have enjoyed the course, I feel wonderful! Thanks for taking the time to let me know. I always look forward to hearing from you, but the positive feedback is particularly appreciated. Read more ...

Travel writing tutor Donna Dailey

As 2014 draws to a close, I want to thank all of my students for their hard work. Your enthusiasm, creativity and desire to learn and grow are inspiring, and it has been so rewarding for me to work with you. This past year I began tutoring the Magazine Journalism course as well as the Travel Writing course, and this has brought a lovely new dimension to my work.

Many people have good ideas and a love of writing. But not many people take that next step, and begin the hard task of learning how to turn their passion into a craft. Writing is easy. Writing well is hard work. Read more ...
