Dear writer

Imagine your drains are blocked, so you call out a plumber. When he arrives and quotes you for the repairs, you tell him apologetically, 'My budget doesn't cover that. But if you do it for free, I'll tell all my friends about you.'

Sounds ridiculous, right? But that's exactly what many companies expect of freelance writers, particularly young or new writers wanting to break into the industry: they offer 'exposure' in lieu of payment.

If you're serious about being a freelance writer, you need to be professional about how you handle the money side of things. Getting your byline on a story won't pay your bills.

That said, there are some rare instances where not getting paid for publication is acceptable - for first-time fiction writers trying to get their name out there, for instance, or journalists writing for non-profit outfits.

Here's to writing - and getting paid for it!

COLLEGE NEWS

Our free 5-day Grammar Zap e-Course launched last month, only to hit a few technical snags in the first days of opening. Our huge apologies for this.

Our current newsletter subscribers couldn't receive the course, as the sign-up system only recognises new subscribers.

This is one aspect that we unfortunately cannot fix, so existing newsletter subscribers will need to use a different email address to sign up.
