Letter Number 25 February 12, 2013
|
|
The Fiscal Cliff now seems to be called Sequestration 2013. Here we go again with a March 1 deadline. For some reason, I and many others aren't interested!
The stock market surges and everyone's response is "It can't last!"
Boeing has bonged.
Is there any good news? Beyonce was great last weekend and Apple is working on a watch-like device that will perform some functions of a smartphone.
And Apple has introduces a larger storage iPad that interests me greatly. See video below.
If you don't view anything else, scroll down to the last video. I guarantee you'll be entertained.
Also it's February---that time of year to dine frequently on one of the major food groups: CHOCOLATE.
Indulge!

Is the Golden Age of Stocks Over?
2.5 minutes
Will stocks ever come back from the doldrums of the last 20 years? Here is Carlsen's researched opinion.
Dentist Bottom Line: The Millennials are waiting patiently to take over investing, probably within the next ten years or so. They will most likely invest heavily in stocks for the reason provided.
With each forward of this newsletter, you help keep private practice alive.

Dr. Michael Schuster on Life Balance
3.5 minutes
Schuster comments that he often hears "My life is out of balance and I have a work/family disconnect." Schuster then provides clarity on money vs. time stress.
Bottom Line: Professional families face "time stress" issues constantly. Schuster is one of the few consultants that comments on such issues.
It is quite unusual to find a dental family free of time/money issues. And the higher the doctor's net, often we find higher stress and burnout.

Apple's New iPad Will Be Largest Yet
4 minute video Since late 2009, my MacBook Pro has been turbocharged from 160GB of memory to 500GB, it's RAM has been upped from the manufacture's recommended maximum of 4GB to 8GB, I've broken the glass screen, and finally had to get out the dental instruments to repair my touch pad twice. I've known I need a new iSomething for a year. I have a 2012 iPhone4s, yet haven't made the move to any tablet because of - Limited memory
- Possible difficulty with slide presentations
The big negative of my MacBook Pro is the weight--- I really need something lighter for travel. The MacBook Air seemed a good choice, yet now the new iPad tablet has as much storage as the basic "Air"---128 GB.
Bottom Line: The new iPad costs $779 for wifi and $929 for the cellular version. It has 128 GB of storage. It will hold all your iTunes, most your pictures, some video, and all your important documents. The iPad weighs 1.5 pounds vs. the MacBook Pro's 4.5. In other words, it's perfect for business. Will it replace my laptop? With a Bluetooth keyboard for $50, and a backup hard drive for extras, the answer looks like yes. And by the way, I haven't used a desktop for four years, even with a lot of video editing and Garage Band movie making. |
The Benefits of Uncertainty
5 minutes
Professor Taleb, of NYU and Oxford, and author of the bestseller The Black Swan, is a heavy financial hitter. The short interview regarding his new book, Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder, gives insight that uncertainty may be a good thing on a macroeconomic and personal level.
As the Fed tries to stabilize our economy, Taleb asserts that it may be creating a higher probability of larger disaster(s) down the road.
Bottom Line: As dentists, we face income uncertainty on a monthly basis. This may be a big benefit as we have to adapt at a quicker rate than those employed or in a less volatile industry. The down times, as Howard Farran always expouses, are fertile with possibilities for reinvention and re-invigoration. |
