Roses are Red, These are for You
Raquel has been a MOWSF Social Worker for 2 years and conducts regular visits with seniors and consults with the drivers who see our seniors on a regular basis. For those seniors who need more care, the social workers become case managers who make referrals, assist with crises and provide ongoing monitoring.
Last week when Raquel conducted a home visit with a MOWSF client, she didn't expect anything special or unusual based on his current condition. Arriving at the scheduled time, she rang the doorbell, but no one answered. She called him on the phone; no one answered. She waited for approximately 15 minutes until the door opened. In the client's hands were the most beautiful Ecuadorian roses that Raquel had ever seen!
The client was late to answer the door was because he was in his backyard cutting the flowers for Raquel. "This is my way of saying, 'Thank you'," he told Raquel. She was so touched because the client suffers from COPD, which makes breathing very difficult, so for him a simple task of gardening takes four times as long to do.

Grocery Delivery Growing Strong

Our Home Delivered Groceries program that began two years ago is growing strong. It is a unique collaborative effort among the San Francisco Food Bank, Self-Help for the Elderly and the City of San Francisco's Department of Aging and Adult Services. This program provides 80 seniors throughout San Francisco with nutritious produce and staples to make their own meals, rather than having prepared meals delivered. Every Wednesday morning, dedicated MOWSF volunteers hand their clients a bag brimming with groceries. This past year, the SF Food Bank provided us with 110,008 pounds of food at an average cost of 4 per pound. The estimated retail value of that food is $182,613! We look forward to another fruitful year of collaboration.

Thank You to our Recent Beneficiary Event Partners!
Just last week, MOWSF partnered with three organizations, who organized fabulous wine and food events. A portion of ticket sales from these events will benefit our homebound seniors. We want to thank:
Jordan Winery celebrated its 40th Anniversary with Meals On Wheels of San Francisco. This fun event, held on Saturday, June 2, included live music, hors d'oeuvres, festive food stations, Hog Island Oysters, and, of course, amazing tastings of older Jordan vintages.
Macy's Great American Chefs Tour stopped in the San Francisco Union Square Store on Saturday, June 2. This exciting event featured Chicago celebrity chef Rick Bayless and a slew of local culinary luminaries, including Lori Baker and Jeff Banker of Baker & Banker, to demonstrate how to prepare their signature dishes. And it was taped for a brand new cooking show coming this Fall to Public Television!
On Monday evening, June 4, Wines of Portugal hosted an amazing tasting across the range of Portugal's wines. Almost 400 guests enjoyed over 150 Portuguese wines from more than 30 wineries, along with delicious Portuguese-inspired food from Taste Catering.
