Fireman Refers Senior in Need to Meals On Wheels
At Meals On Wheels, we receive intake calls from many different sources: family members, nurses, social workers, neighbors and even the senior themselves. Sometimes community members going about their business take notice of seniors in needs and make a difference between life and death.
Recently, San Francisco Fireman Woods received a call from the manager of an apartment building that an elderly tenant had fallen. When Captain Woods and his team arrived, they found Mrs. R. unable to move. Captain Woods, whose own mother is 93, took a genuine concern in this 85-year-old woman who had been living in her apartment independently sine 1968.
Captain Woods learned that she was legally blind and diabetic. He was disturbed to find out that she hadn't eaten since that morning and all she had for food for the next week was a few hot dogs in the fridge. When he asked her what she was going to do for dinner, she began crying. She was embarrassed and didn't know what she was going to do about food. Mrs. R hadn't asked for help for fear of having to leave her home, and also didn't know where to turn for help.
Captain Woods called Meals On Wheels, and we immediately provided Mrs. R. with nutritious meals. She is now doing well and has her diabetes under control.
If you know a senior that may be in need, please call (415) 920-1111.
