Meals On Wheels - Nourishing the Whole Person
Who is a MOWSF Client?
We serve over 1,800 seniors every day. They are frail, have limited ability to purchase or prepare meals, and have little or no support from family or caregivers. Here are a few of their stories...
Loni, 82, began receiving meals in 1999. She is on a diabetic meal program and her husband was also a MOW recipient until his death in 2002. Loni is the main caregiver for her son Curt, 60, who suffers from a brain injury and severe asthma. He uses a cane and often has dizzy spells. Curt began with MOWSF in 2004 and was also referred to the SF Food Bank's Supplemental Food Box program.
Mrs. R, 81, lives with her elderly husband. She has fairly advanced dementia and needs supervision 24 hours a day. She has been hospitalized several times due to diabetes and uncontrolled blood sugar levels. Her husband tries to shop for both of them, but he is frail and doesn't know the right foods to manage her diabetes and hypertension.
George, 75, used to be an extremely active senior who walked two miles a day. He now suffers from heart and lung trouble. He recently had bypass surgery and often experiences shortness of breath and dizzy spells. He is easily fatigued and sometimes spends up to 20 hours in bed because it is too draining to move around.
With all these seniors, MOWSF has helped them remain healthy and safe. If you know someone who is in need of our services, please call us at 415-920-1111.

Local Chefs Secure $20,000 for MOWSF
As part of the SF Chefs 2011 event in early August, the Illy Chef Challenge featured teams of two: Chef Elizabeth Falkner of Citizen Cake and Orson and Chef Chris Cosentino of Incanto up against Chef Dominique Crenn of Atelier Crenn and Russell Jackson of Lafitte.
The chefs had to prepare the best four dishes possible in one hour with coffee as the "secret ingredient". The battle was intense as the chefs competed for the charity of their choice. Chefs Falkner and Cosentino were "playing" for MOWSF. Chef Cosentino remembers delivering meals with his grandmother. Regarding working with Chef Falkner, he says, "We've known each other so long, we've cooked together, gone on trips together, and eaten out together. We're fortunate here in the Bay Area that the camaraderie between chefs is so great." And MOWSF is fortunate too! With Chase Sapphire Visa Signature as the major sponsor, MOWSF received the $20,000 grand prize. Thank you Chase Sapphire and Team Falkner/Cosentino!

Twelve superstar chefs from the San Francisco Bay Area have come together to create the 2012 "Chefs of the Bay Area" calendar. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the calendar will benefit MOWSF.
Pre-sale orders of the limited edition calendar are available now at mowsf.org for just $20 ($1.50 will be added for shipping).
"We are deeply honored to have the support of these 12 world-class chefs," said Ashley McCumber, Executive Director at Meals On Wheels of San Francisco.
The official kick-off party will take place in mid-October in Macy's Union Square Cellar. We will keep you posted on the exact date and time. For additional information about the calendars, contact Karen Gordon at [email protected] or 415-343-1279.
