One Grateful Senior
"Meals On Wheels fills in the important gaps in my life," says one San Franciscan woman on our program who is turning 84 in a month. "It's a godsend."
Diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2009, Ms. M has been a Meals On Wheels recipient since last summer. "As part of my annual physical, my chest x-ray showed a suspicious spot. I had a biopsy and, sure enough, I had a malignant tumor." She quickly started her first course of chemotherapy, and there have been three more tumors since then, as well as surgery. The hospital social workers recommended Meals On Wheels and applied on her behalf.
"I've lived in my apartment building for 40 years. In the past several years, several of my neighbors—who were like family—have either moved away or passed away. I don't know anyone in my building now. I don't have a family. I was married for a short time, less than two years, and never had children. I was so busy working for 43-plus years and having a good time all my life, but now the shortage of family, and friends moving away or dying, has caught up with me. I was out to dinner almost every night and worked very hard, and it all just stopped."
"The people on the Meals On Wheels staff are so accommodating and caring. I look forward to seeing the drivers, sometimes they're the only people I talk to in a week. We have a nice little visit each time. The food nourishes my body, and the people nourish my soul."
